BED BUGS! 🐜 Booked rooms for athletes to stay in and several of them got relocated to a different hostel because of bed bugs and severe bites. Some bugs were the size of cockroaches. The staff knew and refuse to throw away the mattress and bed. They just change the sheets and move a new person in.

Told by another guest that their room had bedbugs on our final night. Check the other reviews as well. The fact they aren't taking the issue seriously is awful. Also, they didn't inform us of the Welcome to Innsbruck pass which could have saved us lots of money. Staff didn't seem bothered when we told them.

I recently had a highly disappointing experience with Montagu hostel, which left me not only frustrated but also concerned for the well-being of future guests. An infestation of bedbugs marred my planned stay at this hostel, and the subsequent customer service interactions only served to compound my dissatisfaction. Regrettably, my hopes for a quick resolution were dashed as the hostel staff demonstrated a lackadaisical attitude towards the bedbug infestation. Instead of acknowledging the severity of the problem, they downplayed the issue and insisted that it was an isolated incident. They downplayed the problem by saying that it is a worldwide problem, which is no excuse to me. In my opinion, they should shut down the hostel to get the problem properly fixed and start with a clean plate. This dismissive approach left me feeling not only frustrated but also concerned for the safety of other guests who might unknowingly be subjected to similar conditions. To add insult to injury, the customer service provided by Montagu hostel, during this ordeal was shockingly inadequate. Despite the evidence of a bedbug infestation, the hostel management refused to refund my reservation fee, arguing that I had not given them sufficient notice of my decision not to stay. It was also very expensive compared to other hostels, so my budget was completely ruined because not only did I not get my money back, but I also had to book another place to stay. This blatant disregard for customer satisfaction is unacceptable, especially in light of the health risks associated with bedbug infestations. It is disheartening to see a hostel prioritize profit over the well-being and satisfaction of its guests. I strongly advise anyone considering a stay at Montagu hostel to think twice and explore alternative accommodations. The lack of cleanliness and the indifferent customer service make this hostel an unfortunate and regrettable choice for any traveler. My experience with Montagu hostel was a nightmare, and I hope that my review serves as a cautionary tale for others seeking a comfortable and bug-free stay.

Close to the center of town, great people, stayed in a 6 bed mixed dorm, was cozy and made friends with everyone. Bar downstairs is super cool, but it is loud at night, so bring ear plugs if you aren't a heavy sleeper you will hear the smokers outside. Was very affordable, near restaurants and groceries, full kitchen, stove, oven ect. Coffee for 1 euro. Would reccomend. We read all the reviews about bed bugs, but they had information pamphlets that explained all the steps they took, which cost them 20-40k euros (if I remember) and shut the hostel down for 3 weeks to mediate the problem.

Unfortunately, what would have been a great hostel stay was turned negative by the presence of bed bugs in our beds. The atmosphere and beds were very cool, we enjoyed the live music and bar aspect of the hostel- but none of that matters so much when you have to get worried about being bitten in the night. All throughout the hostel were flyers posted warning about bed bugs, urging travelers to immediately inform the staff of bed bugs if they were found. Though it was alarming to see, it was refreshing that they seemed to acknowledge it and seemingly take it seriously. Once my partner and I did find both bed bug droppings and an actual bed bug in our beds, we alerted the staff immediately, upon which they put our bags in their freezer and paid for our laundering of our clothing. On top of that, they moved us to a new, private room, and assured us that the room we had been staying in (a 10-bed dorm on the first floor) would be shut down and that other guests would be alerted. It seemed like they were handling it as best as they could, until….. Despite telling us their intentions to shut down the room and clear it of any other guests- they didn’t. In fact, they were actively sending new arrivals into that same dorm room, and didn’t seem to be warning anyone at all. Our faith in them taking the bed bug situation seriously was sadly squashed, and it started to seem like they may have just moved us to a private room so that word didn’t get out. Sadly, it does not surprise me that a week after our visit to this hostel, that I’m seeing other travelers post reviews about bed bugs as well. Last, they had us send pictures for proof to their team email, and we were met with a kind response, though devoid of much responsibility for the occurrence. Oh well. What could’ve been a really cool hostel experience ruined much of our trip to Innsbruck, and tainted the remaining week and a half we had left for the rest of our overall stay in Europe, worried that we will be taking bed bugs with us where we go, or even back to our country.

We visited as a pair of English tourists. We were greeted by a nice lady on arrival who gave us details of our dorm. Instructions were concise and easy to follow. We then realised that 2 other dorms had access to our dorm which was slightly concerning but we had seen this on previous reviews so we were aware beforehand, I would recommend a separate code for each dorm. Beds were so comfy and the area was quiet apart from other guests in the dorm being noisy during quiet hours (doing ballet and shouting at 11pm in the kitchen???? and aggressively blowing their nose every 3 minutes. Slept well on both nights. Kitchen facilities are very good, no microwave. The toilet and shower facilities were disappointing. There is only one shower and toilet in the dorm of 6 people, could do with two? The shower was built for dwarfs, I'm not tall but kept banging my head on the weird slanted ceiling, the shower head wasn't fixed and kept falling down. Checkout at 10am but we found out that you stay asleep as long as you want as long as you don't stay in your bed. Despite it's shortfalls and the lack of staff presence at the bar/reception, there were no bedbugs (yay) and we pleasantly enjoyed our stay. Thank you for having us. Just a note: I've seen a few other reviews stating the hill to the hostel is too steep, don't worry the hill is a 10 second hike, they are just lazy individuals. We liked the dogs too 🐕.

Location is good, but other things are unfortunately not, we stayed at this hotel for 1 night with my friends in 10 dorm room, the room was really freezing even though we told the reception to turn on heater, I can say the outside of the building was warmer than in the room. Overall, the room and sheets did look dirty, however hotel has struggled with bedbugs in the past, there was notifications and suggestions how to prevent, staff was seems nice.

They have definitely fixed the bed bugs issue. They have very good procedures in place and for a smaller hostel it was very clear they cared about guest experience. The only issue I had was one day after cleaning our room they left the door open, which was probably an accident but definitely a security issue especially in the all girls dorm.

Staying here is so nice, the bed's are nice and private. the bar downstairs is a very nice place to grab a drink after a long day. There were people in other rooms on our floor that notified the staff of bed bug's and they had someone come the same day! Will definitely stay here again.

Attention, be careful, there are BED BAGS in the rooms! They bite hard, I had an allergic reaction, severe itching. Besides, then they easily brought bedbugs home, so I had to wash all my things. The hostel is aware of the problem, I have attached a photo.

Good atmosphere and enjoyed my stay- until my bed was infested with bed bugs. And when I emailed management about them and they said that it wasn't the properties fault.

“Don’t let the bed bugs bite”. Huge infestation of bed bugs when I arrived and poor management of the situation. Would not stay here at all.

This Hostel is a shambles. I left after 1 night due to a bed bug infestation that had affected the first 2 floors of the hostel and management responded extremely poorly. There was a known case of bed bugs 1 week prior to my arrival and this had not been dealt with by the time of my arrival, as such, every bed in my dorm had bed bugs. The workers did not believe that there were bed bugs on the second level as the "can't climb stairs". They made excuses instead of accepting that they have problem

Vibe Analysis
Montagu Hostel is a central Innsbruck base with a bar-first personality: beer downstairs, occasional live music or DJ nights, and an easy walk to the old town, river, restaurants, and transport. It works best for anyone who wants the city close and does not mind a hostel that can feel more like a nightlife spot than a quiet bunkhouse. The standout detail is the rooftop kitchen and terrace. It gives the place a real hangout zone, with cooking space, a dishwasher in some accounts, and mountain views that make coffee or a cheap dinner feel less like budget survival math. Dorm beds often have a pod or cave-like setup with curtains, indirect lighting, and decent privacy, and the mattresses are often comfortable. The design is quirky and social, but also uneven: some rooms feel stylish and clever, while others feel cramped, hot, cold, dusty, or less polished than the photos suggest.
Signals to check
- Noise can be intense, especially from the downstairs bar, terrace, street, live music, or bass that may run until 2:00-4:00 a.m.
- Recent bed bug problems may be a risk; check the bed area on arrival.
- Some dorm and private-room doors may not lock, and storage security can be limited or inconsistent.
- Bathrooms can be sparse for the number of beds, with one toilet for a floor in some layouts and toilets sometimes separate from sinks.
- Cleanliness, maintenance, Wi-Fi, heating, hot water, and room temperature can be inconsistent.
