Confirmed Google Maps
This hostel has an active bedbug infestation as of October 14, 2017. They state they are dealing with it "as it comes up", which does not seem likely to be successful.

Vibe Analysis
The rooftop patio has a BBQ, giving HI Halifax Heritage House an actual hangout spot above the street instead of only an indoor common room. For Halifax, that is a useful little bonus: cook, sit outside, and stay close to downtown without making the hostel feel sealed off from the city. The core setup is practical: a large shared kitchen, a co-working area, good Wi-Fi, lounge spaces with games, books, puzzles and TV, laundry, bag storage, and a secure building. The location is the main win, with VIA Rail, Maritime Bus, the harbourfront, Pier 21, restaurants, cafes, a supermarket, and central sights all walkable. Beds are often comfortable, bathrooms are often clean, and the renovated parts can feel fresh. The social side is friendly but not massive-party chaotic. Social nights may run, common areas make conversation easy, and the place can work well for a simple Halifax landing pad. It also has rough edges: room comfort depends a lot on placement, staff warmth can vary, and the atmosphere is more functional hostel than polished boutique stay.
Signals to check
- Rooms can be hot or stuffy, with weak ventilation and limited cooling; attic, basement, and crowded dorms are the bigger risk.
- There is no elevator, and upper floors can be awkward with heavy luggage.
- Bunks generally lack privacy curtains, lockers may need your own lock, and dorm noise can include snoring, door slams, and late arrivals.
- Cleanliness is inconsistent: plenty of spaces are spotless, but dirty floors, hair, towel issues, and tiny showers have also happened.
- Mice have appeared in kitchen or common areas, including recently.
- No breakfast is included, coffee or tea may run out, and after-hours check-in or refund problems can be frustrating.
