Really friendly, very comfy beds and cosy and friendly common areas. Love the big squishy sofas, chocolate pudding and kind staff. I heart there were bedbugs here though a few months ago, I hope this has been sorted out now

People were nice but definitely got bed bugs bites here... didn’t realize until I came home and had a doctor look at them. Luckily none of them traveled with me across the world. It may be resolved by now but not sure. It’s a bit out of the way of things as well. Maybe next time I’ll stay closer to downtown. Wouldn’t recommend unfortunately.

Vibe Analysis
Free chocolate pudding with ice cream at 8pm is the Tasman Bay Backpackers ritual. The phone-down hour around it gives the hostel a real social engine: cards, chess, board games, couch chat, and the kind of low-pressure mingling that makes Nelson feel less like a stopover and more like a small shared house. The common areas are the main draw: big sofas, books, games, guitars, a keyboard, and a log fire in colder weather. Outside, the garden has hammocks, tables, trees, and plenty of room to sit alone or link up with other travelers. The vibe is cozy and home-like rather than polished. Practical stuff is strong too: a large kitchen, useful storage space, laundry, off-street or nearby street parking, and luggage storage for Abel Tasman trips. Camping and tramping gear may be available to hire, which makes the hostel especially handy before or after a hike.
