Explain how it works
We compare every 5★ review's word count against the global distribution. Hostels where unusually many top-rated reviews are suspiciously short — way under the typical length — start to look like the staff (or a boost-my-listing service) is padding the score with throwaway praise.
The detector flags reviews that are both top-rated and below a length threshold, then estimates how many of them statistically shouldn't exist. For this hostel we scanned 7403 top-rated reviews and 0% were suspiciously short.
Length z-score: 6.00. A z-score measures how far this hostel's distribution of 5★ review lengths sits from the global average, in standard deviations. 0 = perfectly typical. 1–2 = slightly unusual but within normal noise. 3–5 = strongly anomalous. Anything 10+ means the pattern is so far from the global norm that it's effectively impossible to get there organically.
This is a heuristic, not a verdict — it surfaces hostels worth a second look, not proof of fraud. Read the actual reviews below and judge for yourself.

bought reviews
I don’t know if this place bought reviews or what not. Rooms have no circulation they stink. The staff can’t be bothered to get people to do the events they have planned. You can’t pay for a coke even tho the staff is doing nothing behind the counter (bar is closed, csnt tap a coke in the machine and let me pay.) The staff won’t look you in the eyes while talking to them. You have to solo check in without people assisting. My guess is that they’re used to the huge amount of people falling for this. Has nothing to do with hospitality. Pool, and a lot of activities that are usually for free in hostels to get people connecting and together cost money. A wine glass costs more than a bar outside, which is outright is insane for a hostel. The location Isint ideal, needs to ferry to get to the city. The movie night didn’t take place because “no one asked for it” You can’t get drinks in the hostel, but the bar is closed. Ordered an Alfredo chicken, came without. Got an apology. My friend ordered the same dish right after, and the meat was missing again. So my guess is they are cutting corners? Overpriced. 54 euros a night and has nothing to do with a premium experience. Shame I didn’t book a smaller hostel and supported a small business that is probably actually trying. P.s: not blaming the staff but rather the owner for setting wrong incentives for the staff and probably paying very little with high turn over.

Nothing, probably location, but it has nothing to do with hostel This hostel is clearly not for international travellers and I won't recommend it to anyone: - Room lockers are of no use, they cannot fit a normal size check in baggage. This is shameful that they have whole building as a hostel but they could not care about having properly size lockers. When complaint about this, staff was like "they cannot do anything, that's how it's". - Plug on the the bed are of no use, USB ports don't work. - Outside lockers are paid and ridiculously costly, €4 for 4 hours - Bathrooms are dirty as if no one cleans them for days. - Beds have no curtains - No hair dryer - This is a completely overpriced thing good for scamming the first time travellers. - I don't understand why and how did this hostel got these many positive reviews, probably this is good as per "Amsterdam standard", or they must have bought the reviews. Otherwise, there is no point in 4.4* by over 10K people. - Someone tempered by check-in bag and when I complaint, staff reacted as if nothing happened and put blame on me. - Completely capitalized hostel, they made basic things customizable so that they can make extra money. What the heck is charge for late check-in? Charge for lower bed? Charge for lockers? Every damn hostel I stayed in, had free lockers for guest. - It seems that someone got a building on lease and they thought to made it a hostel without doing any research about hostel and not giving any thoughts about the travellers' needs. - I looked at the negative reviews after my negative experiences and the owner has audacity to justify the negative ratings. - Added to my worst European hostels list. - Location is good though

10/10 but for the money
Great place to stay, not 10/10 but for the money it’s worth it. Staff are very helpful and kind, and other guests are friendly. Room was clean, good drinks available, would stay again if I returned 😀

refund, no compensation. We had to extend our stay just to dry our clothes. A frustrating
The private double en-suite was super tiny with zero amenities. The dryers didn’t work—after paying and waiting overnight, our clothes were still soaked. Paid for another round, wasted more time, still wet. When we told the front desk, they said, “Oh really? Why didn’t you come to us after the first round?” As if they’d dry them by hand! No refund, no compensation. We had to extend our stay just to dry our clothes. A frustrating and disappointing experience.

10 out of 10 for the staff. I didn't like it was a cash
I loved that I got to meet new people which is always something you get within a hostel and that there was many things available from board games to food and beverages, the hostel was clean and tidy and the bedding was comfortable which is always lovely. The staff were always willing to go that extra step to help you out if you need the help with anything. So 10 out of 10 for the staff. I didn't like it was a cashless property. I feel I should have been able to use my cash. But that's just my opinion.

refund. Raised the review
I really wanted to like my experience here, but the disconnect between the hotel and housekeeping staff is not permissible, especially given the hostel's price point. When checking in around 6pm on 4/22, I noticed that the private room I booked had not been cleaned. As I have dust-induced allergies, the level of dust in the room, in addition to the hair on the ground and unemptied garbage cans were concerning. We spoke to the front desk and were told that it would be cleaned. I left for dinner and exploration, but when I returned at 11:30pm, the room had still not been cleaned. I spoke to Anas at the front desk, and he hurried cleaning staff over, but the staff were disgruntled with the sudden request and did not clean the room. At 12:30am on 4/23, I had given up and tried to get some sleep. At 7:45am on 4/23, I spoke to the front desk about what transpired the night before, and spoke to the Team Lead on shift as well. She informed me that all she could do was provide a complimentary breakfast, but, given the urgency of my departure, I did not feel this was an appropriate compensation for needing to clean my own hostel room to get some sleep. The Team Lead informed me that a manager, on shift on Monday, 4/24, would contact me regarding this issue and any potential for reimbursement or discount, but I have not received any such communication. Overall, I am very disappointed, having spent almost $250 for one night at this hostel and having such a difficult experience. Edit (5/7/20223): They may have just been busy - I would have appreciated some communication earlier, but they reached out expressing sincere condolences and an appropriate partial refund. Raised the review from 1 to 4 stars. I would highly recommend this place, but just keep this potential event in mind!

suspicious of the amount of good reviews
The rooms are too small for the number of beds. At night it is very noisy and difficult to sleep with loud men snoring and grunting disgustingly. The windows do not open. There is a major lack of ventilation. The toilet room stunk strongly of urine - it is not cleaned properly. I am suspicious of the amount of good reviews. It must be fake, businesses do this all the time.

asked if they had Conditioners, I was told this was not a 5 star
Very well located, a lot of opportunities to socialize and the hostel itself has a great bar with fair price and a lot of room to hangout. Internet was good as well. Definitely NOT a place to work remote from, music playing until 1am and no privacy! Bedroom doesn’t have curtains on the shared bedroom so you are really exposed. When I asked if they had Conditioners, I was told this was not a 5 star hotel and they didn’t have it! Very rude!

told us the 4 bed bedrooms doesn’t even exist when the review
I don’t think is fair that you’re not even sure in what kind of bedroom you will end up. In theory I booked a stay in a 4 bed one and they gave us a 6… Went to the reception to solve this situation and the staff told us the 4 bed bedrooms doesn’t even exist when the reviews and the pictures of the hostel say otherwise. It’ll be really nice to know that you’re booking one or the other, because it’s kinda shitty that they lie to you.

reviews but they must be fake
I would NEVER go here again…We booked this because of all these good reviews but they must be fake or something. There was only one singular women toilet (and one unisex one) for the whole third floor. And it was so dirty, it seemed that it hasn’t been cleaned for months. The windows don’t open and the air was terrible. Felt like I couldn’t breathe. Everything was so disgusting dirty. Location is nice but that’s really it. The app key system is also chaotic because people check in/out whenever

I would NEVER go here again…We booked this because of all these good reviews but they must be fake or something. There was only one singular women toilet (and one unisex one) for the whole third floor. And it was so dirty, it seemed that it hasn’t been cleaned for months. Also the light wasn’t working in the women’s toilet so I had to use my phone flashlight. Shower was so dirty with so much hair that it could have been a wig. There are windows but they don’t open and the air was therefore really bad. As some with asthma it was even worse for me. You need to make the bed yourself which isn’t bad but a bit annoying. A bunch of times housekeeping didn’t strip the beds and when new people checked in it always caused problems. Also people check in and out whenever they want because of that app system which was also chaotic. Bunch of trash lying around from guests before which does not get cleaned and there were used cigarettes in my locker. The location is really really great but that’s the only good thing.

reviews fake
Worst hostel experience I have ever had in 80 countries. Are the reviews fake? why is the number so high. Overnight staff is useless and could not help and would not help, but I will say Elisabeth at check in was the best part of the stay. She was super nice and kind. But back to my issue. Way too loud. Why vacuum at 2am... someone yelling on the phone in the bathroom next to my bed at 2am. And just so loud in the rooms not to mention I didn't feel comfortable with a guest in my room. Would not move me or let buy a new room or even check out. They would not let me buy late checkout. They would not let me sit in the lobby. Honestly stay anywhere else. I would rather sleep outside. Am I upset? 100%. I am not happy at all. By far the worst hostel experience i have ever had.I would personally sit outside telling people to leave before they check in here. The overnight staff does not care about the comfort and safety of the guest. Biggest travelling mistake I have ever had was paying to stay here.

Vibe Analysis
ClinkNOORD is a big Amsterdam basecamp with the ferry commute, plenty of bodies moving through, and enough common-space energy to feel like a real hostel rather than just stacked beds. The trust profile is messier than that friendly shell. Recent reviews report theft from a private room, weak staff response, women-only room failures, bedbugs, and booking/payment disputes. The setup can work, but this is a watch-your-bag, verify-your-room, do-not-assume-the-system-is-working kind of stay.
Signals to check
- There is a direct theft report with poor follow-up from the hostel.
- Women-only room handling has serious complaints.
- Bedbugs have been explicitly reported.
- Booking and payment handling can feel slippery.
