This is also a practical Northland base for Cape Reinga, sand dunes, lighthouse trips, long beach walks, and slow recovery days after being out in the wind and salt. Expect an old-house feel: wood, creaks, thin walls in places, shared facilities, and the occasional door bang. For the right traveler, that tradeoff buys a clean, social, beachside lodge with actual personality.
