I was excited about this hostel because of the great reviews. Unfortunately on the first night there were bed bugs in my bed. Another guy in my dorm also had them in his bed. At first staff were helpful & moved me to another dorm, but when I reported continued bites in that dorm their responses became short & cold and I started to feel quite unwelcome at the hostel. Another friend of mine staying there also reported bites and the staff just told him to go to another hostel, offering no refund.

Best view ever and the staff is amazing but super overpriced and the rooms are not clean. Unfortunately I also got bed bugs there :-(

Vibe Analysis

America del Sur Hostel is built around a huge, sunny common area with lake, town, and mountain views, especially good at sunset. It feels more polished than a bare-bones dorm stop: warm rooms, clean shared spaces, big lockers, ensuite showers in many dorms, a fireplace and sofa setup, and outdoor space with hammocks for post-glacier decompression. The social energy is real but not purely party-hostel chaos. There can be live music, tango, themed dinners, a bar or restaurant, and plenty of space to meet people, though the size and mixed crowd can make it feel closer to a relaxed lodge than a backpacker pressure cooker. Staff help is one of the strongest parts here, especially for booking Perito Moreno trips, taxis, buses, airport transport, SIM-card help, and general El Calafate logistics. Breakfast is included and usually simple: bread, cereal, coffee, juice, yogurt, and sometimes paid eggs. Rooms are usually clean and warm, with decent showers and a more comfortable setup than the average hostel, but the design is uneven. Some dorms are tight, some bunks lack curtains, ladders, or rails, and ensuite bathrooms can mean noise, smell, or awkward sink placement inside the room.
