So This is a great place to stay, friendly people, clean facilities, shopping, coffee shop Beartooth theatre all close by. I have stayed here many times, A female brought in Bedbugs from a local hotel. Owner dealt with this in a timely manner with no more incidence. I Love this place and highly recommend it.

I stayed in this hostel in the Fall of 2012 and was bitten countless times all over my neck and torso by bed bugs. At first I was a bit confused as I could not find them, but upon closer inspection of the bed frame, I found 2 hiding by the screws holding the wooden bed frame together. The long term tenants told me that they have had this problem since summer but the owner is not investing the money to fix the situation as he is trying to sell the building. This is my journal entry from my time at the hostel: i'm getting bitten like crazy. so many that i woke up an hour after i fell asleep to itchiness all over. :( i want to cry. i killed 4 bugs yesterday...

Vibe Analysis
Daily guided hikes are the big Base Camp Anchorage move: the hostel can plug solo travelers into Chugach trails, Flat Top, lakes, tundra, and local nature without needing a rental car or a full plan. It feels built for Alaska logistics as much as sleeping, with local advice, camping gear, bear spray, bikes, and easy bus access between the airport, downtown, and Spenard. The house has a warm, social, DIY co-op feel across multiple levels, with common rooms, a shared kitchen, a backyard, a teepee and fire pit, and three backyard chickens adding a weird little homestead charm. The sauna is a real highlight, and there may also be a float or sensory deprivation tank for a full decompression arc after trail time. Dorms can be simple but useful, with privacy curtains, outlets, lockers, heating, and clean shared bathrooms showing up as strengths in the stronger experiences. Breakfast is basic self-serve pancake mix, oatmeal, coffee, and tea rather than a hotel spread. The best fit is a social, outdoorsy traveler who wants a launchpad, conversation, and practical Alaska help more than polished hotel comfort.
Signals to check
- Basement dorms may feel dark, damp, cramped, or less like the photos.
- Bunks and mattresses can be wobbly, squeaky, thin, or saggy.
- Extra fees may apply for towels, laundry, sauna, float tank, bikes, hikes, gear, early waiting, or luggage time.
- Noise can carry through the old house, especially from stairs, kitchen, common areas, early departures, and late arrivals.
- Breakfast is basic: pancake mix, oatmeal, coffee, and tea rather than fruit, yogurt, cereal, or a full spread.
- Policies around cancellations, rebooking, sickness, and fees can feel strict or inconsistent.
