Explain how it works
We compare every 5★ review's word count against the global distribution. Hostels where unusually many top-rated reviews are suspiciously short — way under the typical length — start to look like the staff (or a boost-my-listing service) is padding the score with throwaway praise.
The detector flags reviews that are both top-rated and below a length threshold, then estimates how many of them statistically shouldn't exist. For this hostel we scanned 2161 top-rated reviews and 1% were suspiciously short.
Length z-score: 14.04. A z-score measures how far this hostel's distribution of 5★ review lengths sits from the global average, in standard deviations. 0 = perfectly typical. 1–2 = slightly unusual but within normal noise. 3–5 = strongly anomalous. Anything 10+ means the pattern is so far from the global norm that it's effectively impossible to get there organically.
This is a heuristic, not a verdict — it surfaces hostels worth a second look, not proof of fraud. Read the actual reviews below and judge for yourself.

Safestay was once a very decent hostel. It is not the place I enjoyed on two previous occasions! It is impossible to sleep with the extremely loud creaking mattresses! No outlet to charge my electronics. An individual client is shuffled around during their booking to accommodate Safestay's seemingly priority clients, the groups! Broken/malfunctioning room equipment is oh I'll have maintenance fix it. It Never happens. Continually needing to watch safestay ad to connect to Wifi is frustrating and not secure. Days for a London visit are expensive and money and precious time are totally wasted repacking then waiting 10am to 2pm to change rooms to accommodate Safestay groups. How fair is that? What an expensive waste of holiday time! My booking was nonrefundable and so was obliged to stay and endure... but I will not return.

The location of the hostel was good, many bus lines run along the street and there is also the metro nearby. I liked the curtains on the beds, they give a feeling of greater privacy. Bathroom cleaning needs to be more frequent, some days the bathroom was very dirty. The reception staff do not serve customers well, when I needed to communicate the experience was terrible, people do not respond well and are very rude. Furthermore, the hostel reception only accepts cards, but other services such as laundry and lockers use cash, so the customer needs to leave the hostel to exchange money. The money issue needs to be reviewed, it causes a lot of inconvenience, if the hostel only uses cards, then install improvements in the service areas! I also suggest training attendants to know how to deal with the public and serve people better, at least with education.

The serenity was quite amazing. The staff are down to earth doing their jobs perfectly. The neatness of the place is second to none. The prices per each night is not encouraging, it's so expensive that I had to leave and booked in another Airbnb not too far from you and had a better offer. As a student from another country that needed to start his program on a good footing, i almost got drained financially in the 10 days I lodged there. Getting houses to stay in town is not easy and too much high prices for an Airbnb would be so discouraging. There are lots of competing Airbnb's around you, so force your prices down a little to encourage us the more. Most bathroom doors are not locking, most bed light switches are not functioning for private light use at night. The checking out time is too early should be made to be at 12noon without a fine to pay. Checking in should be made at 2pm. Look into the issue of non acceptance of cash. That one alone was too frustrating for me as a first timer in UK without work and bank card. I would have slept on the streets of London under the cold situation if not for a friend in Birmingham who assisted me to book online while I paid him in cash. It's not easy finding such people to assist one in a precarious situations like that of mine. Your establishment needed to look into that aspect seriously. There should be a waiver in some circumstances and tight situations no matter the laid down procedures so as to always encourage your clients the more for patronage.

Ilon, one of the manager, was very rude and intimidating, he is not the person happy to receive guests and he deteriorate the image of the franchising lol. There are homeless sleeping in the hostel during the day at the reception and lot of smell at the entrance. Also there is not enough staff working on there and it made the check in so long and unpleasant. Some people working at the hostel come from being homeless nd sleeping at the hostel, they are not well trained and they do not really care, mens pretend to be nice working there to know girls and ask for good reviews and phone numbers. The staff make lot of gossip and if you stay longer you end up to know all the business of the staff and guests, such relationships, bad things… To protect their face they assume to be nice and at the back they will talk about you just to pass the time. Someone do not have life outside the hostel as majority of the staff sleep and work there hence could be that finding the life boring, they like to speculate about people s life and if they do not like you personally they will make your stay unpleasant. If you stay there just check in and avoid them as much as you can until the end. If you are lucky to find clean room you do not need to complain, and if you find homeless and drunk people or some dodgy things in your room avoid to go to the reception to complain as they will target you and will tell you that they will call the police and as I saw for a guest complaining, as soon as he left the staff told that he had drug issues and lot of people there have social issues. The staff doesn’t know what is hospitality, they works there and it is a franchising and nobody care about the guests. Hospitality around the world but forget Safestay in Elephant Castle London, the people like them ruin hospitality in London. If you travelled abroad and saw the difference eg Spain Italy and Greece compared to London, you will understand how people and the staff is the most important thing for a hostel. There is a sort of anarchy where people do what they want and they do not respect guests and the culture of hospitality. They will target you, they will make lot of excuses to make you leave the hostel r the last minute coming in the room when you having shower and they will ask you to leave days before your check out, they will refund you to avoid any claim at the court however as it is a private company they will do whatever they want with guests. And if you are not weak as they wish they will ask to do not go there anymore, indeed they allow homeless going there.

My (top-bunk) bed did not seem made (it was not just that the covers were untidy, it legit looked as if someone just slept in it). I was a bit annoyed about that and simply concerned whether I got the wrong bed assigned to me and I'd be woken up by a another guest in whose bed I was sleeping. When I mentioned that to the reception, they said 'someone must have been keeping it warm for you ' and then asked me to leave a good review. Jesus. Also, disgusting toilets.

Good price and nice location. The bathrooms were OK and the beds what I could expect for the price I paid. I can't believe no one in the reviews is mentioning how awful the reception staff is. The guy who checked me in was very clearly not happy to be there, incredibly annoyed and passive aggressive. He asked me to pay again with no other explanation, when I told him that Booking had already taken my payment, he just looked at me with the most annoying face he could pull. I asked what the reason was and he asked to see my bank account so he could verify that the hotel was paid for? Obviously I told him I was not doing that, I do not show my bank account to anyone and asked if there's other ways to verify. He said "I don't need to help you, you know" and proceeded to ignore me and watch football on the TV. Whilst I was still standing in the reception area waiting to be checked in. Unbelievably rude. Dude, if you're reading this, quit your job. There's more jobs. You evidently hate your jobs and we hate interacting with you. Move on to other pastures because you made my experience (and people before me in the queue's) very miserable.
