Staff added their own tip onto my credit card without my consent. They were spraying for bed bugs in rooms and then staff were telling guests they were spraying for mosquitoes lol. They charge you for everything and they are very ridged with the rules. Not very flexible for travellers. Staff were rude at times. You cannot hang laundry outside the room, only 1 hook very close to others hooks so your towel and bathing suit will not dry. Barely any air conditioning. Tight rooms. Noisy as there are 12 beds per room. I would not stay here again.

good hostel, a bit out of the way. And expensive bike rental, can just hire bikes from the locals outside the hostel instead. Thought there would be more mid day hostel outings but there were none on the days I was there. Bed had bed bugs.

Hi all! I rarely write reviews but this one needed to be stated. My friend and I stayed at the hostel for a few nights. We stayed in a 12-dorm mixed room. The hostel itself was very nice as in the design. However, When I realized none of my sheets had been changed, I looked under to inspect it and noticed the sheets had been COVERED in black mold/mildew. It was disgusting. Everytime I asked for new sheets, I was denied. When I showed video evidence to the front desk, they didn’t do anything at all to help me. I asked for a refund because it was so gross. They denied it. Mayan monkey is definitely the most instagramable hostel but if you look deeply, you’ll see how unclean it really is. Also, I read another review stating this location was infested with bed bugs. So just be careful!

Vibe Analysis
Mayan Monkey Tulum is a large property with private rooms, dorms, a pool, a bar, a coworking space, a shared kitchen, and daily activities. It leans toward a high-energy setup, and the place can feel loud late into the night. Some private rooms are spacious and clean, and the design and layout feel polished. Breakfast, yoga, and other day-time activities add structure, though the schedule can change and some features run unevenly. This fits best for people who want an active base with music, drinks, and a social scene. It is not a quiet choice, and the location is not central, so getting to the beach or town can take time.
Signals to check
- Music can stay very loud until late, with bass that carries into rooms.
- The property sits far from the beach and the center.
- Billing, refunds, and extra charges can be messy.
- Safety can be a real concern, including theft and harassment.
- A large staircase at the entrance can be awkward with luggage.
