Au Royal is mainly a budget, central Carcassonne stop: close to the lower town, walkable to the medieval city, and often handy for nearby parking. The welcome can be warm, and the newer management seems to be aiming for a reset rather than pretending the building is fine. Right now, this is a rough old hotel more than a polished hostel base.
