  1. Confirmed Google Maps

Had a really good time here, this is the best hostel in Almaty and the receptionist Aisultan was helpful and kind. Going back next week! No bed bugs like the other hostel i stayed at!!!

  2. Confirmed Google Maps

Location was so far from anything and not decent places to eat nor markets. Rooms were small and beds creaked like crazy. The AC all night was hot then cold so I was constantly adjusting. And I woke up at 2am itching my legs like crazy! Im guessing bed bugs from the red bites. Whole vibe of hostel was odd. Staff just seem unenthusiastic.

  3. Confirmed Hostelworld

The bed was nice and the room was fairly clean, no bed bugs which is a plus. Kitchen and bathrooms were unfortunately unclean. As this had to do with dirty guests, the hostel could have used another cleaner or two. The one cleaner they have is lovely and does a good job. Fine for a few nights.

Vibe Analysis

The courtyard is the main event at Almaty Backpackers: a patio and long table where backpackers gather, grab beer from the shop next door, trade hiking plans, and let the night get pleasantly nonlinear. It turns a fairly basic house hostel into one of Almaty’s easiest places to find day-trip partners, drinking buddies, and a temporary crew for Kazakhstan chaos. The hostel has a homely, social setup with a lounge, kitchen, outside space, laundry, and a nearby metro around a 10-minute walk away. Staff energy can be a big part of the stay, especially around Aisultan, Valentin, Arai, Rufina, and other team members who help with city tips, tours, extensions, and general logistics. Trips to Kolsai, Kaindy, Charyn Canyon, lakes, hikes, and even oddball nights out may be part of the ecosystem. This is more social basecamp than polished boutique pod-world. Dorms can be simple, beds may be creaky or lacking curtains, and the bathrooms are a real bottleneck. Cleanliness and staff helpfulness seem to swing by day, so the best fit is a solo backpacker who values atmosphere, easy connections, kitchen access, and backyard momentum more than immaculate facilities.
