AVOID!! The place is extremely unhygienic – we both got bitten several times by bed bugs during our stay, leaving us covered in itchy bites. The bathroom is disgusting with flies everywhere and a strong smell of mould in the shower. On top of that, there are no ladders for the bunk beds, making it dangerous and difficult to climb up to the top bunks. The hostel is also infested with flies, especially in common areas. If you value cleanliness please don’t stay here 🤢🤢

Dirty, the kitchen was full of old food and flies, the bathrooms were covered in hair and mould, the towels smelt used and my friend got bed bug bites. The check in was unorganised and unprofessional. Also no ladders on the bunk beds so was a bit of a challenge getting to bed. Josko was quite nice and helpful but he clearly doesn’t value cleanliness in his hostel. His replies to reviews tell you everything you need to know about his attitude towards guests and his business. xoxoxo

Be careful of bed bugs at this hostel. The general level of cleanliness was not good. The bathrooms were wet and stinking, dirty food all over the kitchen. My bed was not changed as there was dirt and hair at the bottom under the sheets (black hair - my hair is blonde). The pillows were smelly. I woke up in the morning with my legs covered in bites. I have photos of this. The owner was not professional and spent 5 minutes arguing about whether or not I had bites.

Vibe Analysis
Split Guesthouse & Hostel is tiny, social, and very much a share-house setup: roughly 12 to 14 beds, a dining table/common area where conversations start fast, and a location about 10 to 15 minutes on foot from Old Town. It suits solo travelers who want an easy path into a group, not a polished big-hostel machine. Josko is a major part of the place. He is responsive, gives Split tips, helps with bags and check-in quirks, and sometimes arranges rides, airport transfers, boat-party help, or day trips to Krka, Primosten, waterfalls, and cliff-jumping spots. The standout is that the host can turn the hostel into a launchpad for actual days out, not just a bed near the center. The tradeoff is real: cleanliness is inconsistent and can be bad, especially in the kitchen and bathrooms. Expect a chaotic, self-managed feel at times, cash-only payment, limited or absent on-site reception, and top bunks that may not have ladders. Pick it for the social current and local help; skip it if spotless facilities, quiet nights, or hotel-style order matter.
