My Hawaii Hostel puts the bus stop right out front, with shoreline and beach access a short walk away, so it works best as a Kona base for budget island days. The place is clean overall, with friendly staff, comfy beds, lockers with borrowed locks, beach towels, free coffee, tea, fresh water, and a well-stocked kitchen with fridge and food storage. The kitchen is the main hangout zone. It can feel warm and social, with an easy mix of solo travelers, older travelers, and small groups, and there have been occasional shared dinners or free food and drinks. Formal tours or activity schedules do not seem to be the norm, so this is more of a laid-back crash pad where plans can happen organically than a hostel running daily group missions. A car makes the stay much easier. Public buses and the trolley are close and sometimes useful, but service can be hourly or unreliable, and downtown Kona is not always convenient without wheels. Parking exists, though the on-site spots are limited and can fill up in the evening.
