Bed bugs. Had to leave the hostel due to bed bugs. The pool is so full of chlorine it’s hurts. The staff were kind.

Absolutely loved staying at Vivo Escondido - the vibe is epic, the people are lovely and the location is great. Only downfall is that it needs a bit of TLC and it’s not super clean. There were bed bugs when we stayed and the staff wouldn’t acknowledge it/didn’t really know how to handle it unfortunately.

Good hostel to stay at! Beds were comfy and AC was great at night. Close to two of the smaller beaches, however majority of Puerto is a cab/30 min walk away! However there was some bed bug issues at the beginning of the stay for some friends.

tienen chinches en las camas, toda una tarde me la pase lavando y secando la ropa y cuando me cambiaron me volvieron a salir en la nueva cama, tienen un problema serio y no les importó ni discupas me ofrecieron e igual pague la estancia, no lo recomiendo nada

Vibe Analysis
The rooftop hammocks and sunset views give Vivo Escondido a real reason to linger after the beach. It sits close to Carrizalillo and other swimmable coves, with cafes, restaurants, groceries, surf options, and colectivo access nearby, so the location works especially well for beach-first Puerto Escondido days. The social setup leans relaxed rather than full-throttle party: pool hangouts, a bar, cheap beers, ping pong, a pool table, murals, hammocks, and plenty of shared space. The owner and volunteer crew are a big part of the house energy, and the place can feel like a shared home when the chemistry is right. Quiet hours around 11pm are usually part of the rhythm, so it can still work for sleeping after a social evening. Dorm comfort is better in the bunks that have curtains, lights, outlets, shelves, and night AC. The kitchen is a standout for cooking, with a large, well-equipped setup that suits longer stays. Expect a casual backpacker house with pets around, strong beach access, and a friendly-but-imperfect scene rather than a polished hotel machine.
Signals to check
- Cleanliness is inconsistent, especially in bathrooms, dorm corners, kitchen areas, and the pool at weaker moments.
- Showers may be cold, low-pressure, clogged, or awkward, with limited sinks and few places to hang clothes or towels.
- AC is mainly a night thing, so rooms and common areas can get very hot during the day.
- The social vibe can swing: sometimes warm and easy, sometimes cliquey or volunteer-heavy.
- Payment may be cash-only in pesos, and card payment should not be assumed.
- Wi-Fi can be unreliable, smoking may happen in common areas, and parking may not be available.
