Avoid at all costs! This place is an absolute disgrace. I paid €100 for 4 nights in what turned out to be a bedbug-infested dump. Every single one of my belongings got contaminated—total nightmare. Don't expect to sleep either. You’ll be woken up constantly by the hotel staff yelling, running around, and slamming doors at all hours of the night. Guests scream and party until 4 or 5 AM, and if you dare ask for a bit of respect, the staff scolds YOU like you're the one causing trouble. Unbelievable. The place is a complete mess—no rules, no professionalism, and absolutely no peace. The staff clearly couldn’t care less. My only souvenirs? Bites, sleepless nights, and pure frustration. If you value your sleep, your sanity, and your hygiene, stay far, far away from this hotel. Funny, because plenty of other comments are reporting the exact same issues. Clearly, I’m not the one being dishonest here — you're just refusing to take responsibility. Let me remind you: you were the one who asked us to sleep in the same bed after you messed up the booking and put a man in the women’s dorm. A serious mistake, which you handled with complete disregard. As for the bed bugs, don’t even try to deny it — I have all the proof. And now you're claiming we made noise? Classic move from someone trying to deflect from their own lack of hygiene and poor management. That smell you’re talking about? It clearly came from your filthy rooms, not us. Instead of blaming your guests, maybe start by cleaning your place and living up to your responsibilities.

This Hostel should close and treat bedbugs. The carpets are dirty. I did not understand why they do so many washing machine at the beginning. Now I know. You would better sleep in a tant or at the beach. Anyway If you made the reservation you will see by yourself. They have bedbugs and prefer speaking about their rating on hostelworld and Google maps than treating the problem. I'm not the only adviser speaking about bedbugs

We plan earlier and went in a big group and make a deal to have just our room. They worked for it. The experience there was nice! Nearby to everything u need, and they clean it everyday! They really provide everything u need just ask, thank you so much! Oh 1 more things they don't have bed bugs as mentioned in the review 😊

I was one of the people that hesitate to book this hostel due to the reviews. But after staying here for 6 nights, I definitely would stay here again in the future. People and staff are friendly, no bed bugs, bed is spacious enough, room also quite big, not that much noise, clean in almost all area, and free breakfast! This is one of the best hostel.

Bed bugs... They have a huge problem and always try to say that the backpackers bring it in, although the problem has been around for a while, be careful here. The owner will always try to blame the person writing the negative review. It also is a very chaotic and unorganised hostel, but at least with a decent kitchen.

After staying one night, my whole body was bitten by what it looked like bed bugs or even mosquitoes. The staff were very helpful with cleaning the linen, but it was an inconvenience, as the other girls in the room stated they didn't have bites, so why should they move.

I really enjoyed my 5 weeks at the Shiralee. Staff were all great & friendly! The place feels a little bit run-down in general but I saw improvements being made towards the end of my time there which is great, e.g. new sofas in communal areas! The hostel’s quite small so feels very homely. Bathrooms could do with some maintenance & better cleaning. No keys/locks on bedroom doors.. could be more secure. Bed bug issue during my stay - eventually they had the room professionally cleaned & solved.

A FUIR !

I would probably give this place 3.5 stars but hey, I’ll go for 4. Pros; clean bathrooms, clean enough kitchen, nice lounge, big lockers in rooms, extension cords so top bunks could access them as well, free breakfast, seems safe. Cons; long term guests trash the rooms, so much junk and dirty dishes, the room smelt a bit off… potential for bed bugs which you sign off a wavier for before your stay that you’re aware of it.

unclean place, small and inadequate rooms for a long stay of the boys, confused common areas. on my arrival the bed was not worthy of being presented for a guest who paid, sheets looked used by others. during my stay I got bedbugs. I don't recommend this place.

The hostel was perfectly nice, but the big downside was that we got bedbugs. Of course any hostel can have bed bugs, but before checking in we had to sign a waver which among other things said that if there were to be bed bugs there would be no refund. This thus suggests that they are aware of this problem. Getting bedbugs is the worst so be sure to check your bed! We saw them walking across the bed the last day. Apart from this a nice hostel though.

Stayed at this hostel for months and was happy with the free breakfasts. Had my flight cancelled when I was due to leave so ended up staying an additional night which I forgot to pay. The owner then rang the airport claiming I owed him hundred of dollars and tried to get me on the no fly list. For $20. This was in the panic of Corona when everyone was trying to get home. Absolutely disgusted with Charlies behaviour let alone how inappropriate he is towards women - me and my gf Ambre. Thanks Charlie 👍 paid you so much money and you try to sabotage me for $20. Should also highlight the constant problems with bedbugs. Don't buy the fact this is irregular.

Vibe Analysis

The Shiralee Hostel feels more like a busy Perth share house than a polished backpacker chain. The strongest fit is for solo travelers, working-holiday people, and anyone happy to land in a homey place with a lived-in social circle already moving through the kitchen, outdoor lounge, and common areas. Free breakfast, tea and coffee, a large kitchen, laundry, outdoor space, and occasional food nights such as pizza or BBQs give the place a practical everyday rhythm. The staff are often warm and helpful, and the hostel is usually framed as friendly, safe-feeling, and easy for meeting people when the house energy is open. Beds may have curtains, lights, and power, and the location works well for central Perth: roughly a 15- to 20-minute walk to the CBD, with Woolworths, buses, restaurants, and a park nearby. The tradeoff is that the building can feel worn, cramped, and unevenly maintained, with a community that suits long-stay workers better than a classic short-stop party hostel.
