The flight lesson is the weird little jackpot at Cool Bananas: through Lorenzo, you may be able to go up over Agnes Water and even take the controls yourself. Surf lessons, board and bike hire, beach bonfires, card games, volleyball, occasional free dinners or drinks, and banana-suit Greyhound pickups make this more than a bed stop. Cool Bananas works best if you want a small, social beach hostel with a family-ish rhythm rather than a polished hotel setup. The outdoor areas do a lot of the heavy lifting: hammocks, sofas, a garden/firepit scene, music, games, and enough open space to either join the orbit or chill outside it. The beach, shops, bars, and restaurants sit a short walk away, and Agnes Water feels like the mellow detour instead of the obvious east-coast conveyor belt. Cleanliness is a real strength in the kitchen, bathrooms, common areas, and often the rooms, with the kitchen cleaned frequently and generally open most of the time. The setup is simple and outdoorsy, almost campground-adjacent in places, with toilets and shared life outside rather than sealed hotel corridors. The social side is strong but not universally smooth. The staff and volunteer circle can feel tight, and Scott is a major part of the experience in both directions: at its best welcoming, generous, activity-driving, and helpful; at its worst tied to serious discomfort around aggressive communication, strict rules, fines, and feeling watched.
