Nueva España Hostel

Nueva España Hostel is a basic La Unión stopover best suited to a short night before the boat to Nicaragua, a border-crossing day, or an El Espíritu de la Montaña plan. Javier and the owners can be unusually helpful with ferry questions, Nicaragua immigration forms, taxis, local food tips, and volcano logistics. The big shared kitchen is the most reliable upside: spacious, generally well equipped, and sometimes paired with free coffee, cold water, or towels. There are simple common areas and an inner patio, so the place can work for cooking, waiting out travel admin, and meeting whoever happens to be passing through. This is not a high-atmosphere hostel. It can feel more like a practical crash pad than a social base, with basic dorms, limited staff presence, and check-in that may require messaging ahead. AC rooms are the safer bet in La Unión heat; non-AC rooms can be rough at night. The rough edges are real: bathrooms are a recurring weak spot, with small layouts, outdoor or curtain-separated setups, cleanliness problems, and bins that may not be emptied often enough. Beds and mattresses can be hit or miss, and the property still feels like a work in progress.
