Bed bug reports

I loved this hostel and I wouldn’t usually leave reviews but I found a bed bug on my final morning. I contacted the hostel about this and they told me it was a different kind of bug however the image perfectly matches images online of one, and Google image search confirmed it visually matches. I caught the issue early so managed to get my belongings treated but was left with itching for over a week (the classic 3 bite cluster pattern also confirmed it was a bed bug).

1. I got bitten by BED BUGS and had to go to the HOSPITAL to get treated. 2. My friend and I booked their boat party and paid in full a week prior. On the day of the trip, the boat party was postponed and we weren’t even informed beforehand. We were waiting at their lobby and no one informed us until we asked the staff and told us it was postponed. So we canceled our reservation. 3. Most of the staff are nice and friendly. However, there was one who sort of “confronted” me for canceling our boat party reservation. He said that he waited for me and my friend on the day of the boat party because he wasn’t informed that we’re not joining anymore. It’s not my duty to inform the staff that our boat party reservation was canceled. 4. My friend ordered their cheesy omelette and there was hair in it. Literally inside the omelette.

BEDBUGS!!!!! We woke up at 5am and saw that our beds were covered in bed bugs! The next morning we gave all our laundry to the hostel and it took them over 3 days to wash and dry our clothes (they forgot to dry our clothes many times) The organization and communication of the laundry was awful. Then the stuff told us they were very sorry and that they will close the dorm with the bed bugs. The next day whoever new people checked in and even slept in our old beds.

**BED BUG INFESTATION!!! DO NOT STAY HERE!!!** My friends and I booked two nights at this hostel and first off, we were told that we could no longer stay in the air conditioned room because of “maintenance“, which was a LIE and we very quickly found out that the dorm was closed due to “being treated” for BED BUGS. The owner and staff were all well aware of he problem (as they spray the mattresses each morning after checkout, which we witnessed) and blatantly lied to us, yet continued to check in travelers to another INFESTED dorm room. My friends and I woke up at 5am to multiple bed bugs in our sheets, checked our bags and had a few on our luggage as well. One girl in our room had stayed for 3 nights and was absolutely COVERED in bites, but the staff kept telling her “No it’s sand fleas” LIE! As a well experienced traveler, this is absolutely appalling to me that the staff here are still allowing travelers to stay in these horrible conditions and RUIN people’s trips when we are here and still paying top dollar to be in these countries— they didn’t make us pay, it that’s beside the point. This dorm needs to be shut down immediately before it infects all the other hostels in Port Barton!!

Bedbugs :) - > our blanked was bloody, we asked if they could change it and they changed it. The next day it was bloody again. As our first night's we thought hat could be normal because of insects etc, three days after we left the place we noticed that our body was full of bites. The stuff must know about bed bugs and close the rooms and kill them, they can't be that dumb. Other girl which stayes there as well had the same problem. That was from 6-8 of June 2019. I hope they solved the problem. Because of that only 3 stars. The place is very nice for party, the bathrooms are clean, the stuff is amazing, the happy hour aswell.

Vibe Analysis
CocoRico Hostel is built around a loud, social Port Barton bar scene close to the beach. The restaurant and bar are a real part of the setup, with strong food hits like chicken sriracha, green Thai curry, loaded fries, tenders, breakfast, and big evening energy from free drinks, shots, theme nights, and live music. The boat party island-hopping tour is the standout. It can turn into one of the most memorable parts of a Port Barton trip, especially for solo travelers who want an easy way into the social flow. It is also very alcohol-forward, so it suits party mode better than gentle sightseeing. Dorms are big, usually capsule-style, with wide beds, curtains, large lockers, and enough privacy for a crowded room. Cleanliness, cold aircon, bathrooms, and staff help land well in plenty of recent stays, and the hostel can still be restful once the party winds down around 11. The tradeoff is obvious: this is not a quiet hostel. Large dorms mean noise, heat in the bunks, late drunk returns, limited bathrooms, and occasional water-pressure problems. The common space is basically the bar and restaurant, so there is not much soft landing space away from the party.
Signals to check
- This is a party hostel, with loud music, drinking games, and dorm noise possible late at night.
- Dorms are large, so heat, privacy, and roommate noise can vary a lot.
- Bathrooms and water pressure can be inconsistent, with cold showers or queues at busy times.
- Past issues include rats, blocked toilets, broken showers, and one recent bed bug allegation; inspect before unpacking.
