109 Funchal Hostel
Vibe Analysis
109 Funchal Hostel is a small, quiet base in central Funchal, close to the old town, waterfront, shops, restaurants, buses, coffee, and tour pick-up points. It works best for travelers who want a clean place to sleep between island missions rather than a full hostel scene. The house has more personality than a plain budget box: older architecture, a garden or patio area, a small kitchen, and rooms that may have normal beds instead of bunks. Cleanliness is a real strength, with made beds, towels, lockers or keys in some rooms, and useful basics like shampoo or shower gel sometimes included. The social energy is low-key and inconsistent. There are moments where people connect, especially in shared rooms, but there is no bar, lounge, or proper hangout zone. This is more of a calm launchpad for hikes, beaches, city wandering, and early nights than a chaos lab for making a new crew by dinner.
Signals to check
- Check-in and support are mostly remote, often handled by WhatsApp, and arrival can be stressful if instructions are late or unclear.
- Common space is very limited: the kitchen is tiny, seating can be as little as two stools, and the patio or garden may not be set up for hanging out.
- There are only two bathrooms for the hostel, so waiting can happen, and hot water can be inconsistent.
- Some rooms can be hot, humid, dark, noisy, or close to the kitchen or street; air conditioning is not a reliable expectation.
- Bathroom layouts can feel awkward in shared rooms, including ensuite spaces without a full ceiling or lock.
- Security setup has had serious concerns, including unattended access, keys left in accessible places, or room doors without proper locking in some cases.
