Vibe Analysis
Start Hostel is a practical Keflavik crash pad for late arrivals, early flights, and one-night airport logistics. The most useful detail is the very early breakfast, starting around 3:00 or 4:00, which makes it workable before a pre-dawn departure without leaving hungry. The setup is simple: basic rooms, shared-room options, some private rooms, a communal kitchen, free tea and coffee, lockers, parking, and 24-hour or late check-in. Staff can be friendly and helpful, and the rooms are sometimes spacious and clean enough for a quick reset. This is not a social hostel in the fun-night-out sense, and it is not right at the terminal. The building can feel dated, more motel or barracks than cozy hideout, and the area around it is isolated. Treat it as a functional launchpad near KEF, not a place to hang around or explore from.
Signals to check
- The airport is still about 6-7 km away, usually around 10 minutes by car, and taxis can add a lot to the total cost.
- Public transport can be awkward, especially late at night, on weekends, or with luggage.
- Noise can be a real issue from thin walls, hallway traffic, shared rooms, early departures, and nearby aircraft.
- The building and bathrooms can feel dated, and cleanliness or maintenance may be uneven.
- Double-check room type, bed setup, and bathroom arrangement before booking, since shared/private expectations have caused problems.
