Midgard Base Camp

The rooftop hot tub and sauna are the headline here: a post-waterfall thaw spot with wind protection, sky views, and a real chance of catching northern lights from the warm water. It is open on set evening hours, and when the weather cooperates it turns a simple Ring Road stop into something much more fun. Midgard Base Camp feels like a hostel-hotel hybrid: clean dorms with privacy curtains, private rooms, spacious shared bathrooms, a big lounge with games, swings, a bar, restaurant, souvenirs, and a tour desk. The team is generally warm and hands-on, with check-in walkarounds, local tips, and guided super jeep trips into places like Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk. Practical details are unusually Iceland-ready. There is parking, laundry, boot and clothing drying gear, free coffee at times, under-bed drawers in dorms, and plenty of toilets and showers. Food is a real part of the stay too, with waffles at breakfast and Icelandic dishes at dinner, though prices can still feel very Iceland. The self-catering setup is the weak spot. The kitchen can be cramped and, depending on the setup available, may be closer to microwaves, kettle, fridge, toaster, dishes, and table space than a full place to cook. Treat this as a social base camp with a roof soak, tours, and solid communal spaces, not a budget cooking bunker.
