Explain how it works
We compare every 5★ review's word count against the global distribution. Hostels where unusually many top-rated reviews are suspiciously short — way under the typical length — start to look like the staff (or a boost-my-listing service) is padding the score with throwaway praise.
The detector flags reviews that are both top-rated and below a length threshold, then estimates how many of them statistically shouldn't exist. For this hostel we scanned 684 top-rated reviews and 1% were suspiciously short.
Length z-score: 27.82. A z-score measures how far this hostel's distribution of 5★ review lengths sits from the global average, in standard deviations. 0 = perfectly typical. 1–2 = slightly unusual but within normal noise. 3–5 = strongly anomalous. Anything 10+ means the pattern is so far from the global norm that it's effectively impossible to get there organically.
This is a heuristic, not a verdict — it surfaces hostels worth a second look, not proof of fraud. Read the actual reviews below and judge for yourself.

Reward tied to a review
in exchange for 5 star review
We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights in 2 different rooms. First night on 12th floor. The room had a small attached bathroom but the bathroom had very strong sewer smell. I wouldn't be surprised if they find a dead animal in the drain. Then we were moved to 6th floor due to the smelly bathroom issue. The 6th floor bathroom was fine but clearly not cleaned for awhile. There was a very thick layer of dust on the bathroom vent and a lot of dead bugs in the bathroom light cover. We also saw a roach walking in the common area on the 6th floor. Overall sanitation is a big issue. Hotel offered guests freebies in exchange for 5 star review....This clearly skewed the rating and also the reason that broguth us to this hotel in the first place.....

Vibe Analysis
An Lan Jie Hostel is best for a practical Chiayi stopover, especially if the train station, Alishan departures, night markets, and the Chiayi Art Museum are on the plan. The setup sits inside an older building with elevator access, with hostel spaces spread across floors, so it can feel more like a shared flat than a classic backpacker hub. The 24/7 waffle maker with included mix is the detail that gives the place its odd little charm. A shared kitchen is available too, with free tea and coffee, cooking gear, and a big table for easy self-catering. Rooms can be clean, comfortable, and simple, with some dorm beds having privacy curtains. Wi-Fi seems solid, laundry may be available on the floor, and the overall value works best for short trips or early train logistics rather than a hangout-heavy hostel trip.
Signals to check
- The social atmosphere can be quiet, and the common area may not feel cozy.
- Some showers and bathrooms are very small, with awkward dry changing space.
- Some dorms may feel cramped, warm, humid, or short on ventilation.
- Cleanliness has been uneven in bathrooms, including isolated toilet, dust, odor, and pest issues.
- The layout can be confusing at first, with spaces spread across floors and sinks in awkward places.
