Malecon Guesthouse

Malecon Guesthouse is a basic, cheap Guayaquil base right by the Malecon, close to Santa Ana, the cable car, the iguana park, the river fair, and handy routes to the airport and bus terminal. The area seems safe and walkable, including at night, which makes it useful for a short city stop or transit night. Kaj is the main feature here: he gives practical Ecuador and onward-travel help, can assist with small USD notes for Galapagos, may lend cable-car access cards, rents snorkels, stores bags, and sometimes lets late departures use the shower or common areas. The setup feels more like a homestay than a classic party hostel. There is a living room and balcony chat potential, but the social scene is usually low-key. Rooms are simple, with fans by beds in at least part of the place; some rooms have aircon, hot water, comfy beds, and clean bedding. The tradeoff is upkeep. Cleanliness is inconsistent, bathrooms can be dated or rough, and there have been issues with humidity smell, urine smell, cockroaches, cold showers, weak Wi-Fi, cats in rooms, small beds, and limited key access. Arriving in daylight may help because the entrance can be hard to find.
