Che Lagarto Hostel Copacabana
Bed bug reports

BED BUGS!!! They didn't offer any compensation or anything and did not clean the mattress. Instead, they moved me to a different room and moved a different guest to my SAME infested bed without telling him anything. Also, the A/C wasn't working the entire night and it was too hot to sleep. The hostel is crammed, dirty and without much free space to relax. I would pay slightly more and stay elsewhere. The only positive is that the staff are quite friendly, but the facilities are awful.

Genually an absolute dump. Legs covered in bites from bed bugs, key cards never work, they turn off air con in morning, place is a joke, avoid at all costs. The staff are useless and place is like a funeral home. Oh, how could I forget the cockroaches also. Biggest dump in Rio. Bit of cardboard on the street to sleep on would have been better.

Vibe Analysis
Che Lagarto Copacabana is a Rio hostel to book for geography first. It sits in Copacabana with the beach, metro, markets, bars, and cheap food close enough that the city does most of the heavy lifting. The old-school building has some character, and breakfast can be a useful add-on when the kitchen is having a good day. The tradeoff is that the hostel itself is rough. Rooms can be cramped, worn, and poorly ventilated, with thin mattresses, metal bunks, weak AC, awkward lockers, and bathrooms that may be tiny or badly maintained. The social side is not a reliable backpacker engine; there are occasional nightly activities, but common areas and staff energy are inconsistent, and some nights feel more chaotic than communal. Best fit: someone who wants a cheap bed near Copacabana and plans to spend most waking hours outside. If you need clean bathrooms, secure storage, good sleep, or a warm hostel community, treat this one with caution.
