Hotel 17
Vibe Analysis
Hotel 17 is a budget private-room option near Union Square, with subway access, shops, coffee, restaurants, bars, and groceries close by. It sits in the space between hostel and hotel: more private and quiet than social, with a dated New York building feel instead of polished modern design. The strongest draw is value in Manhattan. Rooms are usually simple, clean, and functional, with details like a sink, TV, heat or AC, desk, outlets, towels, safe, hair dryer, and sometimes a microwave. Shared bathrooms are a core part of the setup, but they are cleaned regularly and often feel easy to use without long waits. This is not a party base. The atmosphere seems calm, private, and low-contact, which works well for solo travelers, longer NYC visits, and anyone who wants a cheap, central room more than a built-in social scene.
Signals to check
- The building and decor are dated, and certain rooms may have noise, drafts, poor daylight, or awkward temperature control.
- WiFi can be weak, sometimes only usable outside the room.
- Shared bathrooms are usually maintained, but soap may be missing and cleanliness can vary between cleanings.
- There is no proper shared kitchen, and rooms may lack a fridge, kettle, or coffee maker.
- Staff can be helpful and kind, but reception service is inconsistent, especially around problems like key issues or room complaints.
- Elevator issues have happened, including a broken lift and rough stops.
