The hostel hired out the entire communal space for a private party and had 150odd random locals round. They didn't bother telling any of the guests! The managers didn't think this was in any way an issue. Bizarre behaviour. They also have a bed bugs problem at present (July 2018).

Vibe Analysis
Local Hostel Manaus sits in a very central spot near Teatro Amazonas, Largo Sao Sebastiao, restaurants, shops, banks, and downtown sights, so it works well as a Manaus base before or after an Amazon trip. The entrance is gated, the front desk runs 24 hours, and luggage storage may be possible after checkout. The strongest version of this place is social but practical: shared areas include an outdoor hangout zone, pool table, lounge, TV area, kitchen, potable water, and a small dipping pool. There is also a weekly activity board, occasional games with free drinks, and tour help nearby, including tips for cheaper Amazon day trips from the pier. Dorm beds can be comfortable and thoughtfully set up, with curtains, individual sockets, lights, and lockers for larger bags. Private rooms can be clean and comfortable too, with air conditioning working well in better rooms. Breakfast is paid separately and can be varied, with regional fruits and juices, though it is not consistently loved.
Signals to check
- Air conditioning can be a problem: dorms may be too cold at night, too hot during the day, and hard to control directly.
- Blankets are not always provided, and beds may have only a thin sheet.
- Noise can carry from shared areas, hall lockers, and nearby rooms, so light sleepers may struggle.
- Room upkeep is uneven, with complaints about mold, ants, bathroom smell, worn linen, old towels, broken fixtures, and limited storage space.
- The street is central but can feel rough at night; arriving by taxi and going straight inside is the safer move.
