Group dinners, yoga, volleyball and pool tournaments create easy mixing; beginner breaks take a 15–30-minute walk, and bathrooms can be unreliable.

Vibe Analysis
Big Surf House is right on the beach in Popoyo, with hammocks, terrace space, sunset views, and an easy barefoot rhythm. The best version of the place is simple: wake up by the ocean, eat the included breakfast, hang around the common areas, and drift into surf, yoga, volleyball, pool tournaments, or a slow beach day. The social side can work well without becoming a full party hostel. It has a chilled, surfer-heavy feel, with group dinners, activities, a pool table, and plenty of lounging space. The restaurant gets love for seafood, ceviche, breakfast, and beach views, though eating there can get expensive. Rooms can be comfortable, especially the female dorm and private rooms, with some beds having curtains, lockers, fans, or AC. The experience is inconsistent, though: bathrooms, water, staff tone, and maintenance are the big fault lines. This is a fun beach base when it is running well, but not a polished or reliably smooth hostel.
Signals to check
- Bathrooms can be limited, clogged, low-pressure, smelly, or missing working locks.
- There is no proper shared kitchen; fridge, kettle, or very basic prep space may be all that is available.
- Staff and management feel sharply inconsistent, ranging from warm and helpful to rude or dismissive.
- Drinking water can be unreliable, empty, salty, or unavailable.
- Power, Wi-Fi, AC, fans, outlets, lockers, and plumbing may be inconsistent.
