Bed bug reports

Found bed bugs in the bedding, hosts were good about it and fully refunded our stay however the experience here was completely ruined by the bugs. Hosts affirm me they will deal with the issue.

Rude owners, gave out to us for arriving at lunch time. Bed bug bites all over us the next day and they said it must be from somewhere else. Sheets had stains on them. Location good but that was it unfortunately.

Vibe Analysis
The massage chair is the little oddball bonus here: useful after hiking, biking, hot pools, or a cold day outside, and it gives the place a more personal feel than a standard budget bed. Hanmer Backpackers is a small, independent wooden hostel with a cabin/chalet feel, a real fireplace in colder weather, and a cozy common area that makes it easy to chat without turning into a party scene. The mood is homely, quiet, and relaxed, with clean bathrooms, a well-kept kitchen, board games, and a central location close to the village and the hot springs. Tristan and Yoko give the place much of its character, with warm welcomes, local tips, flexible help with practical problems, and a hands-on approach to keeping the house tidy. It suits travelers who want a soft landing in Hanmer: comfy beds, a warm lounge, simple cooking facilities, and a social-but-calm place to recharge.
Signals to check
- This is not a party hostel; the vibe is quiet and wind-down focused.
- The hostel is small, with only two combined shower/toilet rooms, so waits can happen.
- Some rooms may be noisy, stuffy, or tight, and pillow or mattress comfort can vary.
- There have been past issues around bed bugs, strict policies, backpack storage, refunds, and uneven service.
