Terrible experience ⚠️ BED BUGS ⚠️ Found bed bugs in the bed and also in my bag after the first night. Another traveller woke up to find themselves covered in numerous bed bug bites. Had to pay to wash all of my belongings. Moved to another hostel nearby. Family Host hostel refused to refund either nights stay despite being infested with bed bugs or apologising. Hostel also had a strange atmosphere with unhelpful staff.

One of the worst places I stayed in during my trip in Colombia. The staff is very unfriendly, and our room had bedbugs. Don’t recommend. The location is nice and it’s cheap to stay.

I really don't recommend staying here. Firstly, as previous comments have stated, the kitchen is full of cockroaches (>20). I woke up with maybe 50 bites. The person next to me had bed bugs in his matress and bag. We informed the owner that we needed our clothes and bags dried on high heat but they didn't have a dryer so we have to go to a laundromat. I am 95,000 out of pocket. They sprayed bug spray in the room then put the uncleaned blankets and pillows back in. There will still be bed bugs.

Vibe Analysis
Family Host Hostel is a small, homey base near the bus terminal and a short walk from the center of Villa de Leyva. The best version of the place is warm, social, and calm: friendly volunteers, easy common areas, a terrace or courtyard for hanging out, and a family-house feeling rather than a big-hostel machine. The arepa-making night gives the social side a local, hands-on shape. There are also traces of bingo nights, yoga, morning walks to a viewpoint, Friday Venezuelan cooking, bike rental, breakfast, laundry, towels, and a kitchen, so the place can work well for a low-key social stop with simple comforts. Private rooms seem stronger than the dorms, with a few comfortable setups and at least one room with a balcony, hammock, TV or Netflix. Dorm space can be tight, with lockers outside and limited room for bags. Beds and mattresses are mixed: comfy in some cases, worn or poorly prepared in others. This is not a polished-clean, no-risk pick. The upside is cheap, friendly, close-to-town, and easy to meet others; the downside is uneven operations, with serious cleanliness and pest issues appearing at times.
