Patagon Backpackers works best as a Coyhaique base for the Carretera Austral: clean beds, a well-equipped kitchen, hot showers when the system is behaving, and staff who can help with route planning, tours, local hikes, and practical logistics. It sits roughly between the bus terminal and the center, with groceries, restaurants, and town errands within easy reach. Hiking gear rental for the Las Horquetas trek can make this more than a bed before the next bus. The hostel also has happy hour, a stocked fridge with beer and soft drinks, and a living-room setup where shared plans can form without much ceremony. The upside is sociable but not polished. Mike is a big part of the place: helpful, warm, and useful for Coyhaique and nearby trail ideas. The building can feel packed, especially around the kitchen and common spaces, and the bathroom situation is more functional than slick.
