Explain how it works
We compare every 5★ review's word count against the global distribution. Hostels where unusually many top-rated reviews are suspiciously short — way under the typical length — start to look like the staff (or a boost-my-listing service) is padding the score with throwaway praise.
The detector flags reviews that are both top-rated and below a length threshold, then estimates how many of them statistically shouldn't exist. For this hostel we scanned 652 top-rated reviews and 0% were suspiciously short.
Length z-score: 6.27. A z-score measures how far this hostel's distribution of 5★ review lengths sits from the global average, in standard deviations. 0 = perfectly typical. 1–2 = slightly unusual but within normal noise. 3–5 = strongly anomalous. Anything 10+ means the pattern is so far from the global norm that it's effectively impossible to get there organically.
This is a heuristic, not a verdict — it surfaces hostels worth a second look, not proof of fraud. Read the actual reviews below and judge for yourself.

reviews since they offer free drink
The owners are insane. Wouldn’t trust the reviews since they offer free drinks for a 5-star rating.

rating on trip advisor. They give hostel stayers a free drink
The owner is rude and not helpful. The hotel charges an absurd price of 50 real for a load of laundry. My roommate and I paid the amount and found our clothes not fully dried at the end of the cycle. Instead of allowing us to use the dryer again, they told us to hang dry our clothes. Even after 48 hours outside they were still not dry. They also did not give me the promised 10 real back when I returned my keycard. Finally, do not be fooled by the high rating on trip advisor. They give hostel stayers a free drink if you rate them 5 stars. One upside is that the rooms are cleaned frequently.

Vibe Analysis
CabanaCopa Hostel has the skeleton of a useful Rio base: close to Copacabana, near the metro, with a rooftop/common areas, some organized activities, and enough traveler traffic that it can become social. Staff and volunteers can be friendly, and the common spaces can produce a lively atmosphere in a secure-feeling area. The catch is not subtle. Recent stays lean rough: cramped dorms, dirty bathrooms, weak maintenance, poor ventilation, shaky bunks, water or hot-water problems, and uneven organization. This is the kind of place that may work if you want the cheapest practical bed near the beach and can tolerate chaos, but it is a risky bet if hygiene, sleep, or secure storage matter. Best fit: budget travelers who mainly want Copacabana access, a place to meet a few people, and are prepared for a rough building. If you are booking a long stay, private room, or Carnival/holiday dates, the price-to-comfort tradeoff can feel especially bad.
Signals to check
- Cleanliness is a major weak point, especially bathrooms and dorm rooms.
- Dorm rooms can be extremely cramped, with limited storage and airflow.
- Water and hot-water reliability can fail.
- There are serious theft and bedbug reports.
