Mad Monkey Koh Rong

Great location but one of the worst Mad Monkey hostels we’ve stayed in so far. The location is perfect, no doubt about it! Beachfront and not a long walk from the pier at all, but a couple of the amenities are lacking. The linens, towels, bedrooms themselves, and even the bathrooms have a funky smell to them. The bathroom situations aren’t the best either; we found the female-only bathroom a lot better, but it still wasn’t great. As they are wet rooms with the toilet and shower in the same space, we found the toilet paper constantly wet and unusable. The food is mediocre, not good, but not so disgusting that you can’t eat it. The worst thing was that we found bed bugs in our first room. After complaining to the staff, who were very blasé about the situation (they even said it happens all the time), we did change rooms. We actually spoke to someone in our first room who said the people who replaced us were apparently kicked out of their original room for no apparent reason (likely to make space for us since we refused to sleep in the infested beds). I suppose one good thing was that management complied when we asked them to wash our clothes free of charge, though we did have to wait a bit longer for them to be collected

Top Lage direkt am Strand und nah am Pier, aber bisher eines der schlechtesten Mad Monkey Hostels. Zimmer, Bettwäsche und Bäder haben unangenehm gerochen. Die Badezimmer sind Nasszellen, wodurch das Toilettenpapier ständig nass und unbenutzbar war. Das Schlimmste: Bettwanzen im ersten Zimmer. Das Personal reagierte ziemlich gleichgültig. Für unser neues Zimmer wurden anscheinend andere Gäste ohne Erklärung rausgeworfen. Immerhin wurde unsere Kleidung kostenlos gewaschen.

La configuration de la chambre manque d’intimité : les toilettes et la douche sont dans la chambre (bien que séparés), ce qui n’est pas très pratique. Par exemple, si quelqu’un est aux toilettes, il est impossible d’utiliser le lavabo. Dans une chambre de quatre personnes, cela oblige à attendre son tour, ce qui peut être contraignant. Après mon séjour, j’ai constaté l’apparition de boutons principalement sur le dos, accompagnés de démangeaisons, qui ressemblent fortement à des piqûres de punaises de lit. Je ne peux pas l’affirmer avec certitude, mais cela reste préoccupant. J’ai contacté l’auberge pour les prévenir, et ils m’ont indiqué qu’une inspection de la chambre allait être réalisée par une équipe sanitaire.

Amazing place to stay in Koh Rong. Great facilities (including the gym). Atmosphere great, always something going on. Good prices for the island and food great. However , the first two nights me and my partner were staying in a dorm and we both got bitten all over. Spoke to staff regarding concerns of bedbugs and they were very apologetic and assured us that sheets would be changed, no issues after this just don’t think it should be happening. Overall would recommend!

We were a group of four and immediately after the first night at the hostel we noticed multiple bed bug bites. We also found small blood stains on the sheets. We informed the staff, who initially denied the situation despite all four of us having several bites. After insisting, we were moved to a room for three people, meaning one of us had to sleep on the floor. The sheets in the original room were changed, but the mattress was not cleaned or treated, so the issue was clearly not resolved. During hostel activities, we noticed other guests with similar bites and intense itching, who were unaware that these were likely caused by bed bugs. This represents a clear health and hygiene risk. The situation was handled with indifference and negligence. We were refunded two of the three nights, which we felt was insufficient given the discomfort, health impact, and additional costs of washing all our luggage at high temperatures. More than two weeks after our stay, we are still dealing with multiple bites and persistent itching. For these reasons, we strongly advise others to avoid this hostel.

The hostel was great, nice beds, clean rooms and bathrooms, great atmosphere that was super social, and a great team of staff and reps. However, as we were checking out we did find a bed bug in one of the beds :( thankfully staff were very apologetic and assured us they would take care of it right away. Other than that, I can’t recommend this hostel enough

Quelle bonne surprise de me retrouver avec une punaise de lit sur moi avant de me coucher. Je suis partie dès le lendemain matin ne pouvant partir au milieu de la nuit. Au premier abord tout a l’air très sympa, bonne ambiance c’est relativement propre mais passez votre tour si vous rechercher du calme, et sans être infesté de punaise de lit. J’ai précisé que j’avais trouvé une punaise de lit on m’a juste répondu « sorry for that ». Je n’ai même pas cherché à demander le remboursement, je suis juste partie. Vous avez une autre auberge plus calme et propre au bout de la plage.

Locations perfect, it’s directly on the beach and it’s a really social hostel with great staff. However we ended up cutting our stay short due to a problem with bed bugs & worms in our beds. We reported this & Marcus was really understanding, he couldn’t have done more to help and made sure we were looked after for the rest of the stay.

We got bed bugs don’t stay here! The showers were always cold and dirty. However the location is good for nest festival.

Bedbugs and food poisoning

I had a great time here, LOVELY staff, but unfortunately I did get bed bug bites. I started to get bites but thought they were sand flies at first but coming to realize they are bed bugs. I just got home and they’re all over my body in lines. Very nervous they traveled home with me so be careful if you stay here! I was just staying in room number 2 to inform the staff and anyone coming!

It’s a mad monkey on a party island can’t expect too much. There’s no proper shower as it’s in every stall with the toilet. My room had NO bed bugs although I was scared one day and asked staff to come check the room and they did so thank you- I slept on top of the blanket as the bed sheet itself is just old. Other than that- drinks and food are good super social and fun - I would book if everything else is booked and you want to stay around the area (that’s what I did)

They sold me a bed knowing it had bed bugs. From people in the room I heard they took out my mattress the night before I checked in and sprayed it after the guest that stayed in the bed left because of bed bugs. The next day they sold the bed to me and gave me bed bugs as well. Having bed bugs can happen to any hostel, but knowing a bed has bedbugs and reselling it the next day anyway is absolutely despicable and disgusting.

Had 4 nights booked at this hostel and on stayed 1. Have a massive bed bug issue and don’t seem to do anything about it. Bathrooms are dirty, with showers that don’t work complete with a lack of toilet paper. Curtains don’t completely cover the beds which aren’t bolted into the wall so you can feel every movement of your bunk mate. Food is decent and one of the better places to eat on the island, but the service at the bar is very slow. Wouldn’t recommend staying here but good for socialising

The staff from the restaurant and the location was nice. BUT there were bedbugs in my bed (I saw few comments already about it). DORM NUM. 1 (mine was bed 4), the previous comments are from 3 weeks ago, they didn’t close the dorm, they are still booking the beds from that dorm and it’s true, they’re in bed, floor, walls, everywhere! When I told to the guy on reception he literally laughed at me and when I showed him the pictures, he avoided looking at me and the pics and just said okay okay bye! Of course bedbugs can appear but the way you treat it/solve the problem is terrible, specially when you keep booking that dorm! And also was 20-25€ per night so it should be an excellent hostel and it’s far away from that. Showers are ALWAYS cold, you have to be really careful with the water as it can be brownish 90% of the times and they don’t change the blankets from the bed

Complained about bed bugs twice and the mattress was apparently treated, by the end of our stay everyone was covered in bites. All the toilet doors were either broken in half or locked you in. Good location and atmosphere!

If you pay in riel, they charge an outrageous rate - they're the only ones to take such a margin! The air conditioning didn't work in my room, it was an oven, and there are bed bugs. If you don't want to sleep well, go there - it's very noisy. However, the organized activities are good, but sometimes those annonced don't take place. The staff are not particularly friendly.

Stay here if you like broken AC, bed bugs, and annoying english reps.

There were Bed Bugs EVERYWHERE in Dormitory No.1, crawling on the bed, walls, curtains, and clothes you hang up on the curtain rod. I got about 200 bed bug bites all over my body, feet, legs, arms, hands, belly, back, neck, and face… There were also dust mites and some sort of ant/beetle. Even after moving out I still have trouble sleeping from the pain and anxiety of the bed bugs! The room was way too hot especially if you were on the top bunk or if the curtains were closed, there was only 1 fan and it didn’t even reach most beds, the AC temp is too high, but there is no remote to adjust. The door gets stuck easily, you have to throw your shoulder into it to push it open. The social atmosphere is ok, but honestly just go to Onederz next door, better quality in everything, cleaner rooms, better food, more mature setting.

People having sex in the room, drunk 18 yo people, music very loud since the afternoon, BED BUGS all around the dorm!! Horrible experience. I didn't feel welcomed at all by the people organising the activities, the people at reception were very nice though.

Ich hatte Bettwanzen-Bisse. Das Personal meinte es seien nur Mückenstiche und sie haben nichtmal die Matratze gecheckt. Ich habe es naiv erstmal geglaubt. Mit jeder Nacht kamen mehr dazu. Es waren deutlich Bettwanzen Bisse! Außerdem wurden meine Schuhe gestohlen und die Klimaanlage wurde vom Personal Mitten in der Nacht auf 30 Grad gestellt. Das Essen im Restaurant ist schon teuer für das was man bekommt. An der Dusche musste man eigentlich immer warten. Es sind relativ wenige Frauenduschen für so viele Betten.

Generally great but there were bed bugs in both the top and bottom of our bunks. (Dorm 5). We told staff and they moved us to another building. It didn’t appear that they moved anyone else and didn’t seem too concerned about it. Again, great place, on the pricey side but something to know and check for. Stay safe xx

👍Posizione fantastica, proprio sulla spiaggia; animazione carina; cucina molto buona; dormitorio da 12 grande, con molto spazio, armadietto sotto al letto (PORTATEVI IL LUCCHETTO!), tenda (ma solo fino alle scalette), due prese di corrente e lucetta personalizzata, molto stabili i letti, non si percepisce alcun movimento da sotto a sopra. Grande spazio con fili per stendere. Un grazie in particolare a Nim, la ragazza inglese della reception, sempre sorridente e professionale, e la ragazza cambogiana dell'animazione (purtroppo non ricordo il nome, comincia per S), una simpatia e un'energia uniche! MA 👎per la posizione considerate che sarete dal lato opposto della spiaggia dove si svolge la grande festa del sabato (Nest), circa 20 minuti a piedi, sulla spiaggia, al buio pesto -l'animazione non è affatto invadente, anzi...spesso comincia solo all'ora di cena e si spegne tutto, musica e luci, imperativamente a mezzanotte!! Per questo tocca poi spostarsi e cercare altri posti. Se state al dormitorio grande comunque non sentirete nulla perchè è quello più in fondo -pulizia praticamente inesistente: il mio letto era pieno di sabbia sotto al lenzuolo, e con ambigue macchie nella zona in basso; il pavimento del dormitorio è una perenne distesa di sabbia e la zona ristorante/reception, dove spesso si sta scalzi, viene spazzata spesso dalla sabbia ma poi lascia i piedi neri (...lo straccio?) inoltre è mancata la carta igienica in tutti i bagni dal sabato, fino al martedì che sono ripartita. -NO ZANZARIERE (infatti sono stata mangiata viva dalle zanzare...o erano bed bugs?) -solo due lavandini per tutto il dormitorio, ma moltissime docce (divise uomo/donna)...ognuna sopra un wc (spazio ridottissimo) -niente bagnoschiuma, shampoo, spazzolini....niente di niente, solo il sapone lavamani -PORTATEVI SOLO DOLLARI!!! i prezzi, si sa, sono alti, ma in più applicano un cambio svantaggiosissimo (in confronto ad altri esercizi sull'isola) se si vuole pagare in riel -il personale sembra sempre tutto molto stressato (cosa c'è che non va nel management?), mattina o sera c'è sempre una coda lunghissima al bar perchè s'incastra sempre quell'unica cassa, molta disinformazione dalla reception, sui loro stessi tour (il programna del tour di snorkeling, tour cancellati che poi invece venivano svolti senza informare tutti,...) , i trasferimenti per altre destinazioni (mi è stato dato un orario di coincidenza inesistente!!), e i servizi sull'isola (avevo bisogno di assistenza medica per tutte le punture subite e mi era stato detto che potevo tranquillamente rivolgermi alla clinica sull'isola, ma per due giorni non c'era mai nessuno, finchè il terzo giorno sono andata in traghetto a Sihanoukville) -

I really wanted to love this hostel and although I had a great time. There are definitely things they need to improve. You don’t get a key when you stay here, it’s a all open place so anyone can come into the dorms at anytime, there was reports of a girl who was stealing peoples items. I also don’t think it was that clean. My body is also covered in bed bugs bites. I think this place is just highly reviewed because the other hostels on the island aren’t any better or cleaner

Originally we were meant to stay elsewhere. However we are so thankful we moved to mad monkey, it is definitely worth that spending that little extra. Lauren,Sima and Leo were amazing!All made such an effort to come over and speak to us and get us involved in all evening activities. The hostel was clean, beds were comfy and the community area was a great space. Wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else in Koh Rong, would highly recommend! No rats or bed bugs either like some hostels on the island

Best beach out of the hostels in Koh Rong. Kept clean. SO MANY FUR BABIES if you’re a dog lover. Food is delicious. Negatives: Dorms don’t have locks on the doors AC is only turned on before night time, you can’t rest during the day coz it’s too hot inside the rooms. Mattresses are covered in plastic, it’s noisy when you move. I woke up with bites all over my body on the 5th day but no one else did. Not sure if mosquitoes or bed bugs?
