Vibe Analysis
The rooftop is the headline here: a small pool and lounge perched a couple of floors up, looking straight out over the beach and the San Juan del Sur sunset, with a bar, a ping pong table, and foosball. When it's clean and the bar is staffed, it's a genuinely great spot to hang out. The catch is that it often isn't. The pool is frequently murky, green, or full of bugs and debris, sometimes closed for repairs, and the rooftop can sit littered with ashtrays and bottles for days. So treat the view as the sure thing and the swim as a maybe. Location is the other strong point and it's hard to beat: walk out the door, cross the street, and you're at the beach, with restaurants, shops, and a cheap comedor next door. The hostel is also tied to nearby Pachamama, its sister party hostel around the corner, which means a $10 discount on Sunday Funday tickets and access to shared events. Sohla itself is more social-but-chill than full party. There's a steady stream of people during busy periods, but it can feel dead midweek, and the common areas tend to close up fairly early in the evening. Beds are a recurring bright spot, comfy with privacy curtains and big lockers, though you'll want a large padlock since the lockers are wide. Lower bunks get the curtains; some top bunks have neither curtains nor a safety railing. Rooms run small and cramped, and several can be stuffy or smelly. The AC setup frustrates a lot of people: it costs around $10 extra per night, staff often hold the remote, it usually only runs at night, and it tends to be either off-and-sweltering or cranked too cold with no in-between. The bathroom layout is the most common complaint. There are only a few showers and toilets for the whole place, often on a different floor from where you sleep, with nowhere to hang your things except a shelf mounted too high to reach. Privacy is limited, the rooftop showers mean passing the pool crowd, and rain can leave one shower unusable. Cleanliness of the bathrooms is hit or miss and sometimes poor. Staff are genuinely a mixed bag. A lot of people single out specific team members by name as warm and helpful with taxis, activities, and bookings, and there are stories of managers going out of their way. But there's also a real thread of the opposite: rudeness over simple requests, staff entering rooms without knocking, and indifference when problems are raised. Breakfast is included and simple, usually make-your-own pancakes with syrup, or basic eggs and gallo pinto, with coffee available from the bar in the morning. There are also paid shuttles to nearby beaches, handy but with timings that change day to day and aren't always posted.
