Explain how it works
We compare every 5★ review's word count against the global distribution. Hostels where unusually many top-rated reviews are suspiciously short — way under the typical length — start to look like the staff (or a boost-my-listing service) is padding the score with throwaway praise.
The detector flags reviews that are both top-rated and below a length threshold, then estimates how many of them statistically shouldn't exist. For this hostel we scanned 5636 top-rated reviews and 0% were suspiciously short.
Length z-score: 6.51. A z-score measures how far this hostel's distribution of 5★ review lengths sits from the global average, in standard deviations. 0 = perfectly typical. 1–2 = slightly unusual but within normal noise. 3–5 = strongly anomalous. Anything 10+ means the pattern is so far from the global norm that it's effectively impossible to get there organically.
This is a heuristic, not a verdict — it surfaces hostels worth a second look, not proof of fraud. Read the actual reviews below and judge for yourself.

review to get free drink
The bartender is icky, showers smell and have mold, washing machine is gross. The bartender made us leave a good review to get free drinks. My friends clothes got thrown away. The reception ladies, chef, and cafe workers are the sweetest though. They are the only ones saving this place.

Review-authenticity complaint
Don’t trust any of the reviews
The hostel is clean and very warm! Staff were friendly and helpful at the desk. Bit annoying you had to put on your own bed sheet, especially as it’s not a fitted sheet. Other than that, good location and value for money. The reason for the low rating … We were staying at the hostel and decided to have a quick drink in the bar. First of all, it felt we were intruding just to order and it wasn’t friendly service either. We sat down for a bit when one of the bartenders came over and asked who was the most competitive. They said if we play a game we could potentially win 4 free drinks for the group of us (all women). If we lost we would have to leave a review that included the bartenders names. The game was intentionally done so that we would not be getting those drinks. Fair enough. What I did not appreciate at all is a grown man tapping a grown woman on the head for getting a riddle wrong. It wasn’t a light tap, either. It was odd and patronising. We would later come to find out from fellow guests (group of men) that they were also told to leave a good review in order to receive free shots, which they did. But no ridiculous riddle game was given to them, nor were they tapped on the head. So it’s interesting that the group of men received free shots just for a simple review yet we were put through a pauper’s task master … and nothing to show for it. Don’t trust any of the reviews, especially the ones that mention the bartenders names directly. The bar is ok. Not particularly lively, not well priced or atmospheric. It’s alright if you’re a guest but after that interaction I’d rather sit on a bench with a cheap beer from the supermarket. Thanks bartenders Leo and Aki for a memorable time and here’s the review you begged for x

pay for a towel, but he offered it to me for free in exchange for a positive review
To the Generator Hostels Administration/Management, If guest experience is a priority for your establishment, I expect to be contacted regarding this matter that left me speechless and deeply disappointed. You know my number and email address. About a week ago, I wrote a very positive review about the hostel, particularly praising Antonios. I initially wanted to pay for a towel, but he offered it to me for free in exchange for a positive review. I didn’t mind, as he was quite nice at the time. However, my experience has since changed due to an unfortunate incident involving him. On Thursday (30.01), I approached the reception and informed one of the employees, Sharon, that I would like to request a late checkout. She confirmed that it was possible but mentioned that the room I was staying in (Room 108) required maintenance. She then told me she would move me to another room (Room 109) and kindly added, “Then the late checkout will be free for you”. (I would like to express my deep gratitude to Sharon and the other staff members for their exceptional professionalism and guest-oriented attitude.) Later that same day, I decided to extend my stay for another night and paid at reception to stay until Saturday (01.02). However, at 10:20 AM on Saturday, Antonios entered the room and, in an unnecessarily aggressive manner, said: “You must pay immediately for late checkout or leave the hostel. Come to reception immediately —I will not come here again to warn you,” while I was still asleep and not fully awake. I told him, “I have a late checkout,” to which he responded in an equally aggressive tone. Still confused by the situation, I went to reception to clarify the matter and asked why he had spoken to me so rudely in the room. His responded “It’s also rude to sleep when you need to check out!”. He then claimed that there was no record of any payment for a late checkout in the system. I explained that his colleague had assured me, “The late checkout will be free for you,” but he dismissed my explanation, insisting that if such an arrangement had been made, he would have known about it. Thinking that perhaps the late checkout had not been properly registered in the system, I said: “Just let me pay for the late checkout now.” To my surprise, he responded that it was no longer possible because the payment had to be made before 10 AM, and that I needed to leave immediately. This completely contradicted his earlier statement in the room, where he had insisted that I needed to come to reception and pay immediately. I then told him, “it’s gonna take time, I need to pack all my belongings.” His response was beyond shocking—he replied, “I will make sure that it doesn’t take time. You gonna leave now!!!”. His tone and behavior made me feel as if he was threatening to forcibly remove me from the room before I pack my stuff. When I requested the contact information for the administration or management, he provided only the reception email and informed me that he would leave a note about me in the system for other employees, as if I had done something wrong. I don’t see any justification to be treated like that. I have never had such an experience and I do not want anyone else to go through the same thing. Therefore, I expect the management to look into this situation.

discount for the guests. Good review
I loved this hostel as it has a lot of common spaces to chat with new people and have fun. I advice to drink in the happy hour as you’ll have wine for 3€. Also the restaurant has a good deal with a 25% discount for the guests. Good review for Leo as he’s a really good barman (do not trust his games). The position is perfect with a wonderful view on the Alexanderplatz tower.

pay. (Unfortunately for us) we liked it a lot. Great place, 10/10
Service is actually insane. They are all really kind and perfect for the job. Aki was behind the bar when he took our order. We wanted a Sex on the Beach, which isn’t on the card, but they were fine with making it anyway. Then Leo came over and asked if he could make something even better. If we didnt like it, we didnt have to pay. (Unfortunately for us) we liked it a lot. Great place, 10/10
