Found a bedbug in one of the rooms we rented. When we notified the staff they refused to check the rooms and claimed that nothing was wrong

Beds were absolutely riddled with bedbugs, I’ve stayed in many hostels and none were even comparable to the level of infestation. Other guests in our room were not given fresh bedsheets after we told staff at the front desk that the bedding wasn’t replaced when previous guests left during our stay. Our labeled food in the community fridge was also stolen. Location is great, and the lobby/bar is nice.

The hostel is in a great location, but other guests were running and screaming in the hallways almost every night, without any kind of warning from the staff. In addition, the bed was itchy as if there were bedbugs and fleas in the mattress. Unfortunately, I didn't have a good experience.

I smoke so I had to go outside for cigarettes . Right outside the hostel there was a man and women trying to sell pot and other drugs . Which wasn’t an issue for me except that even after saying no thanks they kept asking and they were quite blatant and persistent with anyone who walked past and seemed quite dodgy looking . Inside the property in my dorm bed It had bed bugs or some creature biting /me causing you to itch whilst trying to sleep in the beds . I asked the other two female guests in my dorm if they felt they were feeling itchy or being bitten as I was going down to complain as I couldn’t sleep due to the bites and itching. they girls both said they felt the itching . I asked them had they told the staff and why didn’t they say anything they said they were leaving so couldn’t be bothered. It was around 2.00 -3am in the morning and they had a flight to catch . I went and told the staff member on reception . I told her what the problem with the bed was and that I need to sleep and need another room to which she said she can sort that out but first I had to go get my stuff and then she would look at what’s available. I told her I was very tired and can she sort it before I get my stuff ans also can I get one closer to the ground floor as it’s already late. She said I had to get my stuff from the third floor first then she would sort it out. I had a cigarette outside and went all the way up to the third floor and down a long corridor and had to grab all my stuff that was unpacked in my locker all the way back down to reception only to find she had booked a room on the same third floor. I which worried me so I asked her have you had any problems with bedbugs as this will be a nightmare as they get into peoples clothes and belonging and spreads everywhere and she said no just last spring but not this year.

Our private room smelt like sewerage and it was unbearable to be inside. We asked for a new room and were told that all rooms on level 4 might smell the same so they knew this was an issue. We decided to find a different hostel instead of staying in that room. Aswell, the mattress was a peice of foam with so many holes that it would be impossible for someone to check for bedbugs. I do not recommend anyone to stay there. After 2 weeks my emails have not been answered about a refund.

In the first room we were supposed to stay vith a sick woman without any home. The staff was kind and helped us to change room. In that room we found bedbugs so we changed again and it didn’t felt clean at all. So we changed to another hostel. Kind stuff but the hostel wasn’t what we expected…

This hostel is not the best place to meet people, as the communal areas are rarely used, and the empty hallways leading to the rooms felt a bit spooky. The kitchen is only moderately equipped, and at some point, the fridge broke down, leaving no space to store food properly. Unfortunately, there were also bedbugs in the luggage storage room. On the positive side, the location is excellent, and the lockers are modern and can be locked with your room card. However, the card stopped working on the day of check

Lovely staff but when a girl in my dorm moved rooms because of bed bugs they didn’t clean the room down and allowed others to sleep in there after she left. The staff were great, really accommodating and lovely. Unfortunately a bad drainage issue in the all the showers so an egg smell persisted really badly. The staff apologised and allowed me to change rooms but it seemed like an issue across several rooms. Everything else was great, the kitchen space was really clean and a good size for cooking and social

The location is good but that’s all I’ll give it. We got a private 4 person room and while it’s cheap- it’s definitely cheap. There is the bare minimum- we had to make our own beds- you need to ask at the desk for towels which they didn’t mention to us- the shower water goes from hot to cold to boiling hot while taking a shower- the walls are paper thin so you hear everything - the people working reception are rude - they definitely haven’t given these rooms a good cleaning any time lately and there may or may not be bedbugs. I laid in bed itching for 5 hours last night and I’m currently staring at the snot on the wall and side of the bunk bed. If you can’t afford anything better then stay here, otherwise I’d keep looking.

Our class (class trip) arrived at the Wombats Hostel in Budapest in September 2015. At first sight everything seemed nice - the stuff was very friendly and the rooms big enough. But as one classmate said that they got BED BUGS in their room, we all where very shocked. Well, they gave them a new room, but everybody knows: if the bugs are somewhere, they'll be everywhere. Also the dishes for the breakfast where very dirty and not really cleaned. The charlady didn't clean our room ( well, she did as we asked her to do it).... All in all we where really disappointed. I don't think it's the "cleanest Hostel in the world", I'm sorry.

Vibe Analysis
Wombat's City Hostel Budapest is a huge, central base on the Pest side, close to nightlife, food, supermarkets, metro links, airport bus links, and the main city wander-paths. The lobby and common zones are big, with a bar, shared kitchen, laundry, lockers, pool/game space, and room to eat or work. Some dorm beds have curtains, individual fans, charging spots, lockers, or small safes, and some rooms are spacious and clean. It works best as a short, practical crash pad for groups or travelers who already have their crew sorted. The social chemistry is weak for solo travelers: the building can feel hotel-like, anonymous, and full of groups, with limited hostel-hosted bonding. Budapest chaos is right outside and sometimes inside, so this is more logistics than cozy backpacker commune.
Signals to check
- Security is a real concern: open access, theft from rooms, fridges, and safes, strangers entering dorms, and drug sellers or non-staying people inside are recurring problems.
- Cleanliness is inconsistent, with dirty rooms, dusty beds, moldy bathrooms, bad smells, dirty kitchens, and missing hand soap showing up as repeated issues.
- Noise can be rough, especially from hallway traffic, thin walls, parties, large groups, and late-night activity.
- Female-only dorm assignments and room access have gone wrong in serious ways, so privacy-sensitive travelers should be careful.
- Expect paid extras or friction around towels and luggage storage, plus make-your-own-bed setup in dorms.
- Breakfast can feel poor value, WiFi and air conditioning may be unreliable, and staff help ranges from kind to cold.
