Evergreen Lodge

The terrace is the main event at Evergreen Lodge: a hilltop perch over Padang, the river, and Old Town, with sunset views that make the climb feel less like punishment and more like a tiny cardio tax. It is a strong base for Mentawai ferry runs, with the port walkable and help often available for tickets, transfers, bags, and local plans. The social side is warm and low-key rather than mega-party. Shared spaces, balconies, free coffee or tea, a drinks fridge, and occasional shared dinners make it easy to talk without forcing the scene. Staff names like Irma, Ade, Tiara, Venus, Philip, and others keep showing up for the practical stuff too: ferry help, money exchange, umbrellas in heavy rain, laundry, food, tours, village trips, and general Padang navigation. Rooms are usually simple, clean, and comfortable, with aircon in many setups, good WiFi, hot water, and some spacious private rooms. Food can be a real plus when available, from muesli and fruit to Indonesian curries, pumpkin curry, and vegetarian curry. The design feels colorful, homey, and a bit uncommon, with cats, dogs, balconies, and enough odd charm to keep it from feeling like a generic transit stop. The tradeoff is the hill. Access is steep, sometimes via steps or a road that can be rough in rain, so heavy bags or mobility issues may make arrival annoying. A few rooms may be small or windowless, bathrooms can be shared, and low season or Ramadan can mean less food service, fewer staff around, or an empty drinks fridge.
