Happy Apple Backpackers is a simple, low-cost base near Motueka, useful for Abel Tasman plans and road-trip stops. The strongest parts are practical: a large kitchen, plenty of fridge/freezer space when it has been cleared out, off-street parking, warm showers, free Wi-Fi, and a cafe next door. The outdoor setup is the bit with the most personality. There is a garden with covered seating, big wooden tables, citrus trees, herbs, a trampoline, ping-pong, and space for kids or backpackers to hang around outside. Indoors, the lounge has a TV and pool table, and the larger common areas can make it easy to meet other travelers. Staff can be friendly and helpful, with Kelly standing out for hands-on help in a couple of situations.
