Decent facilities and good atmosphere although it felt slightly exclusive. One of the travellers however sustained some bed bug bites during their stay which was very unfortunate and also the refrigerator was quite rank. I have to say the name was also quite hard to remember. What was the name of the hotel again?

Vibe Analysis
Pod-style dorm beds are the clearest bright spot at Finlay Jacks Backpackers: roomy capsules with curtains, privacy, and enough space to sort a bag inside. The location does a lot of work too, with central Taupo, Pak'nSave, The Warehouse, the lakefront, shops, and free parking all close by. The hostel has a courtyard setup with outdoor seating, hammocks, a dining area, and a big communal kitchen. It can feel relaxed and social, with a young backpacker mood, but it is not a polished or quiet base. Staff can be lovely and helpful, and luggage storage may be available. The rough edges are real: thin walls, courtyard and road noise, tiny private rooms, weak ventilation, hot pods in summer, cold rooms in winter, worn furniture, peeling paint, limited hooks or storage, and patchy maintenance. Cleanliness is inconsistent, especially around bathrooms, kitchen fridges, bedding, and shared surfaces. Security can also feel loose, with dorm doors, lockers, and after-hours support not always matching what cautious travelers may want.
Signals to check
- Bring earplugs; noise from the courtyard, road, nearby rooms, stairs, and late-night drinking can cut into sleep.
- Private rooms can be extremely small, stuffy, exposed to walkways, and short on shelves, hooks, or bag space.
- Cleanliness and maintenance are uneven, with recurring issues around bathrooms, kitchen areas, bedding, drains, heaters, switches, and laundry machines.
- Locker access, door locking, and after-hours help can be unreliable, so this may not suit travelers with valuables or a low tolerance for security ambiguity.
- Families, older travelers, and anyone needing a calm night may find the young backpacker energy and shared layout a poor fit.
