Bed bug reports

The showers and facilities in the large dorm are nice but it is one large room with beds lockers toilets etc all in it so showering at night makes you feel bad for others trying to sleep. The 6 bed dorm is just 6 basic single beds which aren’t comfy and lots of bedbugs. No power next to the beds and no privacy. Strangers sleeping in main reception on the sofas.

The property is 15 to 20 minutes walking from the nearest MRT station. Only 1 toilet for 2 dorms with 16 people, surely not enough. Not enough lockers on the same floor of the dorm, so if you check in late you have to go downstairs and use those. During my stay I got bit by bed bugs, and the included breakfast is just some sort of bread with butter.

I had BEDBUGS. no outlet close to the beds. you have to plug your phone on a shared outlet with everyone. Also no curtains on the 18 persons dorm which is quite inconvenient.

Vibe Analysis
Betel Box Backpacker Hostel is a bare-bones budget base in Joo Chiat/Katong, better for Singapore-on-a-budget than for comfort hunting. The neighborhood has food, buses, bars, FairPrice, hawker-style eating nearby, and a more local, bohemian feel than the shiny central zone. The staff can be warm and helpful, with city tips, maps, and a prepared guide for getting around Singapore. The common area can work for hanging out or working, and basics like lockers, fridge access, tea, coffee, and toast with spreads are part of the setup. The tradeoff is very real: dorms are sparse, cramped, and often low-privacy, with no bed curtains, few or no bedside outlets, and Wi-Fi mostly limited to the common area. Bathrooms are a major weak spot, especially the tiny shower-toilet combo layout, wet floors, smell, mold, and uneven cleanliness. Air conditioning may run on a schedule, so daytime heat can be rough. Pick this for price, Joo Chiat food access, and helpful local orientation, not for polish. It can work for a short, cheap Singapore stop if you are fine with old-school backpacker friction and a bit of chaos.
Signals to check
- Dorm beds may have no curtains, no bedside lights, and few nearby power outlets.
- Wi-Fi may not reach the dorms and the login process can be annoying.
- Bathrooms can be tiny, wet, dirty, or moldy, with shower and toilet combined in the same stall.
- Air conditioning may be limited by schedule, making rooms hot during the day.
- The hostel may require making and stripping your own bed, and towels or toiletries may cost extra.
- Breakfast is basic toast with spreads plus tea or coffee, not a full breakfast.
- The location is useful for Joo Chiat/Katong food and buses, but MRT and central attractions can take extra time.
- Social energy is inconsistent; the hostel can feel quiet, odd, or mixed with longer-term residents.
