They had bed bugs and no curtains between beds, but overall a decent hostel.

Girlies this hostel had bed bugs in my female dorm :( also bad AC and dirty bathrooms. Don’t stay here if you are coming from the airport or about to head to the airport - there are so many better options closer to the airport and to the city centre

I think they had bedbugs.. very dirty :( I would not recommend going there and I can not understand the good reviews to be honest.. they left the windows and doors open for longer times in the evening so many insects could go inside… the family dinner was good but barely enough for everyone :( I had good breakfast tho.. Other hostels in Sri Lanka were so much better for the same price

Worst experience of my life… Unhygienic place. Can’t stand or sleep or sit peacefully thousand of mosquitoes will eat you. Till morning we were scratching the whole body. Dirty bed sheet bed bugs. Fan doesn’t work. No electricity sometimes. Was having dinner on our head pipe was leaking

Overall a decent place. But I did not like the location that much. On one side there is a huge street and on the other side a beach where everybody tries to scam you. But the one thing which bothered me the most were the bedbugs. When I woke up the other night, I had a bunch of bite marks on my back.

Don‘t book here! Even a jail is better than this hostel. Bed Bugs 100% guaranteed. Super dirty room, dirty bed sheets, sheets are to small for the old, dirty mattress. AC was working but only on 17 degrees and we weren’t able to turn it off so we kept freezing the whole night. I arrived at 00.30h pm and they asked me to sleep in the common area outside as there are people sleeping already in my room!? After me complaining about that they let me in the dorm, nobody was there…. I‘ve been to so many hostels and this is the worst. Don’t understand the amazing reviews here, might be bots!

Vibe Analysis
Free family dinner is the main social engine at Colombo Beach Hostel: it pulls the place together at night and makes it easier to find onward travel buddies without a forced party-hostel setup. The vibe can be warm, relaxed, and backpacker-heavy, with volunteers helping the social side click. The hostel is close to the beach, with shops and restaurants nearby, while central Colombo and the airport take more effort. There is a rooftop chill area with cushions or hammocks, a pool, lounge spaces, a garden restaurant/bar setup, and a kitchen may be available. Staff can be a real plus here, especially for Sri Lanka route planning, cheap transport advice, luggage storage, late check-in, and general help. Dinesh and Abdul Rehman stand out in the hostel’s recent character: practical, welcoming, and good at making the place feel less anonymous. Rooms are the tradeoff. Dorms and private rooms can be very basic, with mosquito nets, fans, and AC in at least some setups, but comfort is inconsistent. Come for the social dinner, beach access, and easy backpacker orbit; keep expectations modest for the sleeping quarters.
Signals to check
- Rooms can be basic, cramped, damp, hot, or smelly, with bathrooms inside dorms sometimes causing ventilation issues.
- Mosquitoes are a recurring problem; a bed with a working net matters here.
- AC may be limited, switched on only at night, weak, or unavailable in the room assigned.
- Cleanliness is inconsistent, with serious past issues around bedding, mattresses, bathrooms, mold, and insects.
- Security may feel light in places, including room doors without keys and small or rusty lockers.
- The hostel is near the beach but far from central Colombo and not convenient for the airport.
