Explain how it works
We compare every 5★ review's word count against the global distribution. Hostels where unusually many top-rated reviews are suspiciously short — way under the typical length — start to look like the staff (or a boost-my-listing service) is padding the score with throwaway praise.
The detector flags reviews that are both top-rated and below a length threshold, then estimates how many of them statistically shouldn't exist. For this hostel we scanned 1101 top-rated reviews and 1% were suspiciously short.
Length z-score: 12.49. A z-score measures how far this hostel's distribution of 5★ review lengths sits from the global average, in standard deviations. 0 = perfectly typical. 1–2 = slightly unusual but within normal noise. 3–5 = strongly anomalous. Anything 10+ means the pattern is so far from the global norm that it's effectively impossible to get there organically.
This is a heuristic, not a verdict — it surfaces hostels worth a second look, not proof of fraud. Read the actual reviews below and judge for yourself.

Pressure to leave a review
told us, was if we give the hostel a good rating
When we checked in the first thing they told us, was if we give the hostel a good rating we will get a free drink! The hostel is actually not even close to a maximum rating, it is not even close. We have been scammed. The walls are paper thin and and the bathroom is ridiculous. The blankets do not fit in the sheets. The lights are constantly flickering and the shower is like on the beach you have to press it every 30 seconds.

Pressure to leave a review
told to give the hostel a five star rating
Check in process was really quick, but that's where we had our first red flag. As soon as we were given our room key we were told to give the hostel a five star rating and would then be able to get a free drink from the rooftop bar. You shouldn't have to bribe your customers into leaving good reviews, you should earn them. Next, we finally make it to the room, the room size seemed like what one would expect for a hostel. The mattress was pretty uncomfortable, you could feel the springs in it every time you moved. And the stench of the room was unbelievable. I think the smell was coming from the old rug, but honestly it was horrible. Our first night there I had to sleep with my nose in my sweater and sprayed my pillow with perfume to make the experience a bit better. The bathroom was fine, only annoying part was that you have to press the faucet pretty often to keep the shower running. Lastly, when we finally did checkout the rooftop to see what the view was like, the bar was fully shut down. We weren't going to take the bribe in the first place, but if you're going to try to bribe your customers with something, maybe make sure you can follow through with it as well.

five-star reviews appear to be incentivized by free drink
This accommodation has some positives, including a good outdoor space, a safe location, and close proximity to the metro. However, there are several significant drawbacks. Many of the five-star reviews appear to be incentivized by free drinks at the overpriced hostel bar, raising concerns about their authenticity. The bedrooms had an unbearable smell, forcing us to buy air fresheners and cleaning products just to cope. The showers leaked and often didn’t heat up, and overall cleanliness was poor — for instance, the same mop was used on both the bathroom floor and the carpeted area. Additionally, the kitchen lacked ovens and had no space for cupboard food storage. Lastly, despite its high price, the hostel is not in a central location.
