Explain how it works
We compare every 5★ review's word count against the global distribution. Hostels where unusually many top-rated reviews are suspiciously short — way under the typical length — start to look like the staff (or a boost-my-listing service) is padding the score with throwaway praise.
The detector flags reviews that are both top-rated and below a length threshold, then estimates how many of them statistically shouldn't exist. For this hostel we scanned 2048 top-rated reviews and 0% were suspiciously short.
Length z-score: 5.45. A z-score measures how far this hostel's distribution of 5★ review lengths sits from the global average, in standard deviations. 0 = perfectly typical. 1–2 = slightly unusual but within normal noise. 3–5 = strongly anomalous. Anything 10+ means the pattern is so far from the global norm that it's effectively impossible to get there organically.
This is a heuristic, not a verdict — it surfaces hostels worth a second look, not proof of fraud. Read the actual reviews below and judge for yourself.

reviews before coming and decided to get a refund
We were allocated this hotel for our wowcher mystery holiday. We read the reviews before coming and decided to get a refund from wowcher because it looked so bad. Seeing mouldy rooms and dirty bathrooms put us off instantly. I wouldn’t have wanted to stay somewhere which seemed like a health hazard. AIRBNB’s are cheap enough, book one of them instead of this horrid hotel. There is a building site located behind so it’s very noisy. The top floor rooms look to be renovated from the outside but the others seem to have not changed in 15 years!(from another review) Please stay elsewhere, support local residents rather than a large hotel corporation and book and airbnb

Pressure to leave a review
told me that I chose a 3-star hotel and not a 5-star
I asked to check in at 1pm and was told that it was only allowed after 3pm, even though I said I was very tired and would have to leave at 5am. I was also informed that the breakfast room would not yet be open at that time. I asked for a buffet breakfast, common in these situations and as long as it is requested the day before, and they said it was not possible. I asked them to reimburse me for breakfast, but they said they couldn't do it. Room provided with a terrible appearance, not at all clean, the bedspreads were dirty with white stains looking like semen, the decorative pillows had a bad smell, several places were very dusty, the telephone was disgusting, part of the carpet on the floor was very dusty, the furniture very damaged and dirty, the bathroom had a strong smell of urine, several spots on the shower tray had crusted dirt from several years ago, the toilet seat had traces of blood. The situation was communicated with photos to the reception staff who showed me another room, but it was little better. I went back to reception, said that I would not accept a room with that level of hygiene, and they told me that I chose a 3-star hotel and not a 5-star hotel, I replied that I booked a room, to spend around 12 hours, but It should be clean. I said that if they didn't want to resolve the situation they would give me the money back and I would go looking for another hotel, to which they told me that they wouldn't give anything back and that I should contact "BOOKING". However, the manager who saw the photos arrived and was surprised, found it unacceptable and told the staff to put me in another superior room, for the same price. The employee, after being confronted by me about his impolite attitude, ended up apologizing and said that the rooms are around 50 years old and have rarely been renovated, as they have a lot of turnover. They know perfectly well the state of the rooms, which do not meet the minimum standards of hygiene and quality, but they still make them available to customers with the clear intention of making easy money. Booking should penalize and put an end to this situation!!!
