I recently stayed at a hotel and unfortunately encountered a bed bug infestation. The room was visibly dirty and unkempt, which raised concerns about overall hygiene. The presence of bed bugs was not only uncomfortable, but also a clear sign of poor maintenance. I would strongly advise avoiding this hotel due to the lack of cleanliness and pest control.

I stayed here years ago and thought it to be inclectic. Then it was old but very clean. Unfortunately it is now old and very dirty. Strong concerns of bedbugs as i discovered strange bites after awakening in the middle of the night. Concerning.

Very clean room and bathroom NO bedbugs. Very polite employees especially housekeeping . Loved old fashion furnishings . Yes there's noise from bars in the area but didn't bother me at all as I was traveling alone and felt good to hear other people. If ever in El Paso will be staying here thumbs up .
Vibe Analysis
Gardner Hotel & Hostel is a historic downtown El Paso place with real old-building personality: antique furniture, period music, a Wild West / 1930s feel, and a lobby that can feel closer to a tiny local-history room than a standard budget room. The John Dillinger connection is part of the draw, including display pieces in the ornate lobby, and Cormac McCarthy fans get another reason to look twice at the building. The basement kitchen and common area are useful, not just decorative. There is space to cook, eat, watch something, play pool, or hide out between downtown missions, and morning coffee may be part of the rhythm. The atmosphere can be mellow rather than packed, so this is more oddball historic basecamp than nonstop party hostel. The location is central and bar-heavy: restaurants, coffee, museums, streetcars, Amtrak/Greyhound connections, and the Juarez crossing are practical from here. Staff are often helpful with the building's story, and cleanliness lands well in a lot of recent detail, though the place is still old and imperfect.
Signals to check
- Nearby bars and clubs can make nights loud; earplugs may matter.
- No elevator, steep stairs, street parking only, and AC may need reception help.
- Some private rooms are very small, shared bathrooms are part of the setup, and bedroom outlets can be awkward.
- Booking and cancellation terms need careful reading before payment.
- Past problems include bugs, paint smell, weak lighting, or cleaning misses, so this is not a polished boutique hotel.
