Explain how it works

We compare every 5★ review's word count against the global distribution. Hostels where unusually many top-rated reviews are suspiciously short — way under the typical length — start to look like the staff (or a boost-my-listing service) is padding the score with throwaway praise.

The detector flags reviews that are both top-rated and below a length threshold, then estimates how many of them statistically shouldn't exist. For this hostel we scanned 2821 top-rated reviews and 1% were suspiciously short.

Length z-score: 25.90. A z-score measures how far this hostel's distribution of 5★ review lengths sits from the global average, in standard deviations. 0 = perfectly typical. 1–2 = slightly unusual but within normal noise. 3–5 = strongly anomalous. Anything 10+ means the pattern is so far from the global norm that it's effectively impossible to get there organically.

This is a heuristic, not a verdict — it surfaces hostels worth a second look, not proof of fraud. Read the actual reviews below and judge for yourself.

the indian receptionist guy at 9am asked me for my booking number while i was checking out. i showed him the number, he then grabbed my phone and tried to force a full-star review on booking.com and lied about the booking number. highly disrespectful and the hotel is very poor and dirty and scary looking, worst experience ever in a hotel or a hostel. please save your money and go to another hotel. all these good reviews are fake or forced by the workers.

    • Review-authenticity complaint reviews. Either they’re fake

Do not stay here. I can’t believe the amount of good recent reviews. Either they’re fake or we stayed in a different dimension. This place was disguising. The whole building, the hallways all smells so musky and unclean. I didn’t see anyone vacuuming the hallways the whole time I was there, and it shows. As we walked into our room it stunk of urine. All the pillows and doonas had stains on them, the mattress’ had a thick layer of dust on them, and the wall next to the bed had a liquid stain down the wall, which I’m hoping wasn’t vomit… The bathroom smelt strongly of urine, and when the cleaners came in they didn’t wipe anything down, just stripped the beds, changed to toilet paper and left. People in our room were there for 3 days before us and the bathroom was not cleaned once. We complained the first afternoon, and they said it could not be cleaned until the morning. The next day, the room was not cleaned even though we mentioned it twice. The second night we complained a third time and they finally went and wiped it down, but it did nothing for the smell. The 3rd day after complaining 4 or 5 times they finally cleaned the bathroom, but even still the smell still stayed. It’s clear that it’s rare the bathroom gets cleaned, and extremely rare, if ever it gets a deep clean. The sink was leaking the whole time, and the shower and exhaust fan had mould all around. The whole dorm and bathroom just felt so unhygienic. As for the kitchen, don’t even bother. That place is never cleaned, absolutely filthy. For such a big hostel chain, I’d expect better from A&O. We have stayed at other A&O locations before, and they were fine. But this one in particular is horrid, do not come here. I’ve stayed in many hostels, they’re rarely perfect, but it’s been a long time since I’ve experienced one this bad. It has the potential to be a great place to stay, rooftop bar, great location, good sized lockers, but the maintenance of this place is just terrible, and seems like this particular location needs new management.

Vibe Analysis

a&o München Hackerbrücke is a budget, high-turnover place near tram links, the ZOB, and within reach of Hauptbahnhof. It can work as a cheap crash pad when location matters more than comfort, with basic beds, self check-in, luggage storage, a bar and snack setup, and breakfast that can be decent. The rooftop bar and terrace are the standout feature, but they cut both ways. They give the building a social, party-hostel edge, while nearby rooms can get hit with late noise, hallway traffic, alarms, and slamming doors. School groups and young crowds can make the place feel loud and chaotic well past quiet hours. The weak spots are serious: cleanliness is inconsistent, with dirty rooms, bathrooms, bedding, kitchens, odors, mold, sewage smells, and missed room cleaning recurring. Hot rooms, weak ventilation, broken or absent AC, bad Wi-Fi, broken lifts, creaky bunks, limited outlets, room mix-ups, and slow or unhelpful reception are common risks. This is best treated as a cheap bed near transport, not a comfortable hostel to linger in.
