Airlink 100 is the practical airport-to-centre move right now. Checked August 2026: board at Airport Stop A beside the plaza, outside the terminal, and get off at Waverley Bridge for Waverley station, Old Town, the Royal Mile, New Town, and most central hostels. The trip is about 30 minutes, the adult airport single is £6.00, the open return is £8.50, buses run up to every 10 minutes from about 04:12 to 01:00 and up to every 20 minutes overnight on the current Airlink 100 timetable. Edinburgh Airport also lists the city bus stops outside the terminal on its Edinburgh city bus links page.
Pay on board Airlink with contactless TapTapCap, the Bus and Tram app, Ridacard, or exact cash for a paper ticket; if you use cash, have the exact fare because the bus evidence does not establish change-giving. Lothian’s airport-bus page lists the accepted products and airport fares on its Airport Buses page, and its visitor guide is the useful place to re-check TapTapCap and ticket rules before arrival.
The tram stop is outside the main terminal next to the plaza and Edinburgh sign. Normally, checked August 2026, airport trams run from 06:30 to 22:52 every 7 to 10 minutes and the airport single is £7.90, but the live disruption is the point: trams from the airport are only running to West End or Shandwick Place while stops from Princes Street to Newhaven are closed. Buy or validate before boarding at the platform machine, app, website, smartcard, or contactless platform validator; tram machines accept most debit and credit cards and coins, but no change. The active city-centre snag is the west Princes Street fire cordon. For taxis, exit via the plaza and follow taxi signs to the East Terminus rank. Walking from EDI into Edinburgh is not the backpacker default. Unless you have a very specific nearby destination, use Airlink, the tram as far as it runs, or a taxi from the signed rank.
For physical SIMs at EDI, the usable but imperfect lead is WHSmith in Domestic Arrivals before security, open 04:00 to 22:00 on the airport’s WHSmith page. Recent traveler reporting says WHSmith sells EE, Three, and Lebara prepaid SIMs, but the official airport page does not confirm SIM stock, passport checks, activation support, or whether cash and bank cards are both accepted for SIM purchases. For eSIM, EE is the stronger first-night path if your phone supports it. Neither checked page publishes the walk-up exchange spread, and no checked official airport page verifies a passenger ATM location, operator fee, foreign-card fee, or airport-specific dynamic currency conversion outcome. Waverley is already central, so the “transfer” is mostly choosing the right exit. Checked August 2026: use Waverley Steps for the covered lift, escalator, and stair route to Princes Street and New Town; use Market Street for the Old Town south side; use the taxi ranks on Waverley Bridge or East Market Street if you need a cab. The taxi ranks are uncovered and require an uncontrolled roadway crossing, so mobility needs or unusually large luggage are the real reason to slow down and use the step-free route. For onward rail, buy or collect tickets at the ticket office or machines; Waverley has online ticket collection and ATMs on the concourse and by the ticket office. Oyster does not work and cannot be loaded here, so London contactless rail habits do not transfer. Service-gap fallback at Waverley is simple: if your onward train is finished for the night or disrupted, use the staffed station information, the official taxi ranks, or Lothian buses from the centre. Do not plan a tram east through Princes Street in August 2026; the airport-to-city tram disruption still affects the central corridor. Haymarket Railway Station (HYM) to Edinburgh
Haymarket is the west-side rail gateway, useful for West End, Murrayfield, and airport tram or bus interchange. Checked August 2026: it is on Haymarket Terrace, managed by ScotRail, and is the wrong default if your first night is Old Town or Royal Mile unless your train naturally arrives there. Use Waverley for the central handoff when you can; use Haymarket when your hostel or onward connection is west. For tickets and live departures, use the station machines, staff help where available, and the live rail information on the official ScotRail or National Rail station pages. The evidence checked for August 2026 does not publish a Haymarket-specific city-walk route to Old Town, a dedicated hostel pickup point, or a separate local fare rule, so verify your onward bus, tram, or train from the official station pages rather than assuming the Waverley exit logic applies.
Haymarket is a step-free category A station with lifts and Passenger Assistance meeting points. Staff help is listed from 05:00 to 01:30 Monday to Saturday and 07:00 to 01:00 Sunday on National Rail’s Haymarket station page. During the August 2026 tram closure, treat the tram as a west-side or airport connector, not a through route to Leith or Newhaven; check the tram disruption notice before relying on it after a late train.
Edinburgh Bus Station to Edinburgh
Edinburgh Bus Station is the central coach gateway on Elder Street. Checked August 2026: the station is open Monday to Sunday 04:30 to 00:30, the ticket office is open 09:00 to 17:00, and the station has toilets, lockers, WHSmith, a cafe, vending machines, phone chargers, and display screens on the City of Edinburgh Council’s Edinburgh Bus Station page. For the simplest central walk, exit toward St Andrew Square for New Town, Princes Street, Waverley station, and the tram-stop area; the University of Edinburgh points coach arrivals to the same central station area in its train or bus travel guidance.
For onward coaches, use the operator ticket rules for your booked service and check the in-station screens before leaving the concourse. The station has real-time arrival and departure screens, and the city says its management platform distributes live disruption, delay, and event information to station displays and Traveline Scotland; that is the best live check when a coach connection is tight. The service-gap fallback is tied to the station hours. If you arrive after the 00:30 closure or before the 04:30 opening, do not expect the concourse facilities, lockers, toilets, or ticket office to be available. From Glasgow Queen Street, ScotRail runs direct trains to Edinburgh Waverley up to 4 per hour, average 1 hour 10 minutes, with first departure 06:00, last 23:53, and fares from £16.80 one-way based on return fare on the checked August 2026 Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh Waverley route page. If your flight lands late enough to miss the last train, Buchanan Bus Station is the coach fallback, not a route to ignore.
For the 900 coach, checked August 2026: the current route dataset dated 21 July 2026 shows overnight departures from Glasgow Buchanan Bus Station at 01:00, 02:00, and 03:00 arriving at Edinburgh North St David Street at 02:12, 03:12, and 04:12, because Edinburgh Bus Station is closed then; 04:00 and 04:30 departures arrive at Edinburgh Bus Station after its 04:30 opening. Daytime 900 departures are more frequent, but the dataset does not publish fares, so check the live 900 Glasgow-Edinburgh timetable and the airport’s Glasgow bus links before relying on a specific stop or price.
Build in extra time around Buchanan Bus Station. Glasgow Airport warns that North Hanover Street roadworks from 26 May 2025 for at least 18 months are causing significant disruption to bus services accessing Buchanan Bus Station; the warning sits on the Airport Express 500 page. That is mainly a connection-risk warning, not a reason to abandon the route if the flight saving is large.
For taxis, Glasgow Airport’s official white taxis wait directly outside the terminal, with no pre-booking required; pre-booked taxis and ride-hail vehicles generally use Car Park 2 or the main pick-up and drop-off zone rather than the official rank. The airport says its official taxi fleet has 180 white taxis, but it cannot provide return journeys because of driver and vehicle availability. Walking from GLA is out for Edinburgh arrivals. Checked August 2026: Glasgow Airport says it is roughly 9 miles from Glasgow city centre, and the useful Edinburgh route starts with Airport Express 500 from Stance 1. Use the bus, an official taxi, or app pickup; do not try to turn this into a city walk with a pack. The airport distance is in its FAQ.
For physical SIMs at GLA, the official pages confirm WHSmith in arrivals and departures, including Domestic Arrivals 04:00-22:00 and International Arrivals 08:00-16:00 plus 20:00-00:00, but they do not officially confirm SIM stock, passport checks, activation support, or cash versus card acceptance for SIM purchases. Recent traveler evidence says WHSmith at Glasgow Airport sells EE, Three, and Lebara SIMs, but there are also 2026 traveler complaints about airport SIMs that did not work or could not be refunded. The practical data plan for GLA is boring and correct: install an eSIM before flying if your phone supports it, or use the official Glasgow_Airport_WiFi network for online checkout after landing. The airport gives 1 hour free after sign-up and a £2 premium day option on its free Wi-Fi page, but the Wi-Fi terms say public Wi-Fi is unsecured and not guaranteed fault-free. Cash-only arrivals should treat airport connectivity as a physical-SIM staff-and-stock gamble and use Wi-Fi until a city mobile shop if needed.
For money at GLA, Travelex currency exchange and ATMs are listed before and after security, and official airport service pages list ATMs in Domestic Arrivals, Departure Lounge, International Baggage Reclaim, and International Arrivals. Current official pages disagree on exact Travelex counter hours, so treat late-evening counter availability as a live check and use card payment or ATMs as the fallback. Accessibility at GLA is better documented than the SIM situation. Request assistance through your airline at least 48 hours ahead if you can; help points are also listed at drop-off, coach drop-off, car parks, central forecourt bus stands, and the long-stay bus shelter. Glasgow Airport lists walking distances including 300 m from drop-off or Car Park 1 to the main terminal and 100 m from Car Park 2 to the main terminal on its requesting assistance page. If you need a smoother transfer to Edinburgh, the safer public route is bus 500 to central Glasgow, then rail or coach with the operator assistance booked ahead.
Phone, data, and money on arrival
Sort out data before the terminal Wi-Fi becomes a plot twist. If you plan to use a travel eSIM, install it before flying and switch it on only when its activation terms say to. Save the hostel address, booking, first route, and one offline map while you still have a known-good connection.
Scotland uses the pound sterling (GBP). For a physical SIM, keep your passport handy and use the terminal-specific seller details above; registration, stock, opening hours, and cash/card acceptance can differ by shop. For an eSIM, install it before the trip and check the provider's activation-start rule.

- Make sure your ride or transit app can still log in before removing or disabling the SIM that receives its verification texts.
- If you buy local service, use an official carrier shop or clearly branded counter, bring your passport, and confirm the line works before walking away.
- Screenshot the hostel address in the local language and the route you intend to use. A dead phone should be annoying, not mission-ending.
Cash, cards, and ATMs
An ATM can involve four different costs: the machine operator's surcharge, your bank's fee, the card network's exchange-rate markup, and—on a credit card—a cash-advance fee. The amount shown on the machine is not necessarily the whole bill. Read the confirmation screen and cancel if the fee or currency is unclear.
At an ATM or card reader, decline dynamic currency conversion and choose the local currency. Keep a small cash fallback until you have personally confirmed that your first transit route, hostel, and nearby food options accept your card; “cards usually work” is not an arrival plan.
First night in Edinburgh
For Old Town and Royal Mile stays, aim for Waverley Bridge or Waverley station. For New Town and east-centre stays, Edinburgh Bus Station and St Andrew Square are the cleanest handoff. For West End, use Haymarket. For Leith or Newhaven during the August 2026 tram closure, use Lothian buses instead of expecting a through tram; re-check the tram disruption notice before booking a late arrival.
