From Venice Marco Polo Airport, the normal backpacker move is the ACTV AeroBus line 5 from the bus area outside arrivals to Piazzale Roma, then walk over the bridge toward the station/Cannaregio side or switch to an ACTV waterbus if your bed is on an island. Buy in the AVM Venezia app and activate the bus ticket 3 minutes before boarding, or use an airport ticket channel. If you land after the usable bus or boat window, the clean fallback is the regulated land taxi rank to Piazzale Roma, with the official VCE fare listed at EUR 40.
Venice has no metro or Skytrain arrival trick. The useful edge points are Piazzale Roma, Venezia Santa Lucia, Mestre FS, and Tronchetto, then boats or walking inside the city.
Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) to Venice
For the historic centre, use ACTV AeroBus line 5 from Marco Polo Airport to Piazzale Roma. Checked August 2026: ACTV lists the airport ticket at EUR 10 for 75 minutes, EUR 18 return, and says Venezia multi-day passes need a separate airport supplement on Venice Urban Services. Current exact edge times were not published in a stable static ACTV timetable when checked; ACTV points riders to its route pages, while a current timetable mirror showed airport-to-Piazzale Roma departures from about 04:08 to 01:10, so verify your date on ACTV urban lines before relying on the first or last bus.
Buses are just outside arrivals. ATVO's airport map says to leave arrivals, follow signs for intercity buses, and walk about 50 metres; its express stops are Exit D, second lane, stop 3 for Venice and stop 4 for Mestre on the Marco Polo airport bus page. ACTV and ATVO both use the bus area outside arrivals, so do not wander toward unsigned curb offers if you are half-asleep.
For Mestre hostels, ATVO's Marco Polo-Mestre FS coach is simpler than entering Venice and coming back out. Checked August 2026, the 14 June to 30 August 2026 timetable shows Marco Polo departures from about 06:10 to 01:10, a 20-minute ride, and fares of EUR 12 single or EUR 20 return with luggage included in the ATVO Marco Polo-Mestre timetable. ATVO tickets can be bought online, in the app, at authorized retailers, at airport ticket offices, from staff at departure lanes, and from machines; Marco Polo has machines in baggage reclaim and outside, plus an arrivals ticket office open 08:00-23:45 on the airport bus express page.
For Cannaregio, Rialto, San Marco west, or island-first arrivals, Alilaguna can be worth the slower boat because it avoids bridges. The Blue Line links the airport with Murano, Fondamente Nove, Lido, San Zaccaria, San Marco, Zattere, Giudecca Stucky, Tronchetto, and Railway Station Santa Lucia on the Alilaguna Blue Line page. The Orange Line serves Madonna dell'Orto, Guglie, San Stae, Rialto, Sant'Angelo, Ca Rezzonico, and Santa Maria del Giglio on the Alilaguna Orange Line page. Checked August 2026, Alilaguna lists the airport-to-Venice fare at EUR 18 single or EUR 32 return on Alilaguna fares; the operator links current PDFs through its line pages, and extracted public timetables showed Blue airport departures roughly 05:20-00:20 and Orange roughly 08:35-23:05, but late boats do not serve every stop. Check the exact stop row before building your night around the last boat.
Alilaguna tickets are sold online and at ticket offices. At the airport, counters are listed in the arrivals hall 08:00-21:50, moving-walkway entrance 08:00-14:50, and Darsena dock 06:00-00:20 on Alilaguna ticket offices, so late boat users should buy online or at the dock counter. Check Alilaguna alerts on the day: 2026 notices included event suspensions and shortened Blue and Orange service, including Redentore changes that cancelled some late Blue airport departures and limited Orange after 17:00.
ACTV tickets can be loaded to smart cards or bought in the AVM Venezia app. App bus and tram tickets must be activated 3 minutes before boarding; waterbus onboard tickets are paid by POS; bus onboard tickets are cash only where available; tram and People Mover tickets cannot be bought onboard, per ACTV Venice Urban Services. Card payment existing somewhere in the system does not mean every onboard purchase works by card.
A land taxi is a real fallback here, not a vibe-based upsell. The airport lists Cooperativa Artigiana Radiotaxi at the ground-floor terminal entrance, with official fixed fares of EUR 40 to Venice Piazzale Roma, EUR 35 to Mestre centre, and EUR 45 to the cruise terminal on transport to and from Venice Airport. NCC cars can be booked through local operators or Uber, but app availability and price need a live check. Water taxis are a different regulated product; use municipal stations or licensed operators and compare the official sheets for stations such as Piazzale Roma, Ferrovia, Tronchetto, Rialto, San Marco, and Lido on Comune water-taxi tariffs.
Do not walk from VCE into Venice. Checked August 2026, Marco Polo is about 12 km from the historic centre, so walking is only sensible inside the signed terminal, bus, taxi, and dock areas; ACTV's waterbus material makes the airport-distance problem obvious on the Vaporetto page. With one normal backpack, luggage alone is not a reason to abandon the bus or boat. Oversized bags, mobility needs, or a hotel on a difficult island edge are the cases where taxi or water taxi starts making sense.
Marco Polo has free unlimited terminal Wi-Fi on the airport Wi-Fi page. Physical SIMs are shop-dependent: the airport says SIM cards are available at selected shops, and the current directory lists Exactta Group pre-security from 08:00 to 20:00 on Exactta Group, but no official page found publishes a named carrier counter, passport/activation rules, or cash/card acceptance for SIM buyers. For eSIM, there is no official airport eSIM counter sale or cash checkout published; use Wi-Fi for an online provider or buy before landing. Vodafone Travel eSIM Italy is an online data-eSIM path, while Airalo payment methods confirms card, wallet, PayPal, Airmoney, and app-only Alipay payment, not cash.
For cash, Marco Polo lists ATMs in Arrivals and Departures on airport services FAQs, and a yex CHANGE desk on the ground floor before security from 09:00 to 17:00 on yex CHANGE. Checked August 2026, the airport did not publish ATM operator names, operator access fees, or exchange-rate competitiveness. The bus-and-boat routes above can be bought through official ticket channels, but if an ATM offers dynamic currency conversion or an extra surcharge, inspect the displayed conversion and fees before confirming.
For accessibility, Marco Polo offers PRM assistance through the airport system on airport services FAQs. For ACTV, EU Disability Card holders and wheelchair users have a EUR 1.50 special ticket, with a companion free when the card requires one, on Venice Urban Services. For live disruption checks, ACTV publishes planned and real-time GTFS feeds updated 24 June 2026 on ACTV open data, while Muoversi Venezia posts route and service notices on ACTV routes and timetables.
Treviso Antonio Canova Airport (TSF) to Venice
Treviso is the low-cost airport move. Checked August 2026, the terminal at Via Noalese 63/E is open from 05:00 until the last flight, around midnight, on Treviso Airport opening hours. For Venice proper, ATVO line 351 runs from Treviso Airport to Mestre FS and Venezia Piazzale Roma under the 1 July to 24 October 2026 timetable; example airport departures run from about 07:45 to 22:30 depending on the day, and ATVO notes flight delays can shift departures and flight cancellations can suspend service in the line 351 timetable.
Wayfinding is easy if you already have the ticket: ATVO says online-ticket holders can go straight out from baggage reclaim through the sliding doors and find the stop just outside on the left on the Treviso airport bus express page. Tickets can be bought online, in the app, at authorized retailers, from airport ticket offices, from staff at departure lanes, and from machines; Treviso has machines in baggage reclaim and an arrivals office on the same ATVO page.
MOM Treviso Airlink is the train-transfer option, not the direct Venice bus. Checked August 2026, it connects Treviso Airport with Treviso Centrale in 10 minutes, runs roughly every 30 minutes from 06:10 to 22:40, costs EUR 5 for a 24-hour ticket, and accepts tap-to-pay on board. From 1 July 2026, the stop toward the station is temporarily moved to Via Noalese, 50 metres to the right, on MOM Treviso Airlink. Use this if train timing beats ATVO for your arrival; otherwise the direct coach is less fiddly.
Barzi Service is useful when your Venice-side target is Tronchetto, especially for coaches or parking-side handoffs. The operator says its airport line runs every day year-round to Mestre train station and Venice Tronchetto, and its published Carnival 2026 fares were EUR 10 one-way and EUR 18-EUR 20 return on Barzi Service Venice Carnival 2026. That page is event-dated, so check the current Barzi departure and fare before treating it as your only late fallback.
If public transport no longer fits your arrival, Treviso Airport lists Radio Taxi Treviso as the official 24-hour taxi service and says NCC bookings can be made through local operators or the Uber app on transport to and from Treviso Airport. Uber says TSF pickup directions appear in-app and may vary by ride type on Treviso Airport pickup. Match the vehicle and plate in the app; do not accept an informal offer because someone knows the word Venice.
Do not walk from TSF to Venice. Checked August 2026, the airport's own onward inventory points travelers to ATVO, Barzi, MOM, taxi, NCC, or the Treviso station transfer on Treviso Airport transport. Walking is for the terminal-to-stop movement, including the current 50-metre MOM shift, not for reaching Venice.
Treviso Airport has free Wi-Fi and says SIM cards are sold at selected shops, with no phone-company stores in the terminal, on Treviso Airport services FAQs. The relevant HUB shop is pre-security, first floor, daily 07:00-22:00 on HUB. Checked August 2026, the airport does not publish passport activation rules or whether SIM buyers can pay cash, card, or both, so carry both and treat the airport SIM as a backup. For eSIM, no airport eSIM product or cash/card airport checkout was published; use airport Wi-Fi for an online provider, or set it up before landing. Vodafone Travel eSIM Italy is online and card/digital, and Airalo payment methods does not make cash an eSIM route.
Treviso publishes a 24-hour ATM on the ground floor on Treviso Airport ATM, and its FAQ also says ATMs are in Arrivals and Departures on Treviso Airport services FAQs. Checked August 2026, no official page found published a currency-exchange desk, ATM operator names, or operator-specific access fees. If the machine offers its own conversion, inspect the displayed rate and fees before accepting; use town if you need to compare exchange spreads.
For accessibility, Treviso provides free PRM assistance from disembarkation to transport drop-off points if requested through the airline at booking or at least 48 hours before departure; late requests can delay service, per Treviso PRM assistance. For service gaps, recheck the ATVO 351 PDF, MOM Airlink page, and airport transport page on the travel day because flight delays, cancellations, and the temporary Via Noalese stop move can change the cleanest route.
Phone, data, and money on arrival
Sort out data before the terminal Wi-Fi becomes a plot twist. If you plan to use a travel eSIM, install it before flying and switch it on only when its activation terms say to. Save the hostel address, booking, first route, and one offline map while you still have a known-good connection.
Italy uses euros (EUR). Identification and activation steps are operator-specific, so use a staffed carrier shop with your passport if you need an Italian number immediately. A travel eSIM installed before departure avoids making a late arrival depend on store hours or a self-service identity check.

Before leaving the terminal
- Make sure your ride or transit app can still log in before removing or disabling the SIM that receives its verification texts.
- If you buy local service, use an official carrier shop or clearly branded counter, bring your passport, and confirm the line works before walking away.
- Screenshot the hostel address in the local language and the route you intend to use. A dead phone should be annoying, not mission-ending.
Cash, cards, and ATMs
An ATM can involve four different costs: the machine operator's surcharge, your bank's fee, the card network's exchange-rate markup, and—on a credit card—a cash-advance fee. The amount shown on the machine is not necessarily the whole bill. Read the confirmation screen and cancel if the fee or currency is unclear.
At an ATM or card reader, decline dynamic currency conversion and choose the local currency. Keep a small cash fallback until you have personally confirmed that your first transit route, hostel, and nearby food options accept your card; “cards usually work” is not an arrival plan.
Venezia Santa Lucia Railway Station to Venice
Venezia Santa Lucia is the correct rail stop for Venice city centre. Checked August 2026, Venezia Unica tells rail arrivals for the city centre to get off at Santa Lucia because vehicles cannot go beyond the road-and-rail edge points, as explained on getting to Venice. If your hostel is around the station or Cannaregio, you may already be close enough to walk with one normal backpack.
Wayfinding is direct: ACTV Ferrovia waterbus docks sit directly in front of the station, and Piazzale Roma is a 5- to 10-minute walk over the Ponte della Costituzione, supported by the airport-to-Venice route guidance and official maps on Venice Airport transport and Muoversi Venezia maps. Use the docks if your bed is on an island or if large bags or mobility needs make the bridge annoying.
For waterbus travel, use ACTV tickets bought through official channels. Checked August 2026, ACTV says tickets can be loaded to smart cards or bought in the AVM Venezia app; app bus and tram tickets need activation 3 minutes before boarding, waterbus onboard tickets are paid by POS, and bus onboard tickets are cash only where available on Venice Urban Services. For live route checks, use ACTV routes and timetables; for train delays and platforms, RFI's monitor gives real-time Santa Lucia information, with online data possibly lagging station displays by about 3 minutes on RFI live departures and arrivals and the Venezia S. Lucia monitor.
If water service is disrupted or your arrival is outside the useful boat window, stay inside the signed station-to-dock, bridge, or licensed taxi chain. Water taxis are regulated separately, and the Comune publishes station tariffs for Ferrovia and other stands on water-taxi tariffs. Santa Lucia is an RFI assistance station; RFI says assistance between 07:45 and 22:30 can be requested at Sala Blu or by phone up to 1 hour before departure or arrival on Venezia S. Lucia station assistance. ACTV's EUR 1.50 special ticket for EU Disability Card holders and wheelchair users is listed on Venice Urban Services.
Venezia Mestre Railway Station to Venice
Venezia Mestre is the mainland rail gateway, useful when your hostel is in Mestre or when your airport coach lands at Mestre FS. Checked August 2026, Venezia Unica lists Railway Station Mestre - Venezia as a distinct arrival point, separate from Santa Lucia, on getting to Venice. If your booking says Mestre, do not automatically continue to the island; check the address first.
For first-night Mestre clusters, the clean arrivals are rail to Venezia Mestre, ATVO from Marco Polo to Mestre FS, ATVO 351 or Barzi from Treviso Airport to Mestre FS, or FlixBus Mestre train-station stops. ATVO treats Mestre station as a regular airport-rail transfer point on Mestre Railway Station, and FlixBus lists Venice bus stops including Mestre train-station stops on bus stations and stops in Venice.
For operating checks, use the operator attached to your arrival: RFI station displays and live monitors for trains, ATVO or Barzi for airport coaches, and FlixBus for intercity coaches. RFI's live tool gives real-time departures, arrivals, delays, and platforms, with a possible 3-minute lag against station displays on RFI live departures and arrivals. The current evidence does not publish a single all-operator Mestre departure board for every bus and rail mode, so verify the mode you are actually using.
Tickets and payment depend on the next leg. ATVO airport tickets can be bought online, in the app, from airport channels, retailers, machines, and staff as described on ATVO Venice airport bus express. ACTV tickets can be loaded to smart cards or bought in the AVM Venezia app, with the onboard cash/POS limits listed on Venice Urban Services. No metro closes the gap between Mestre and your bed; if you are going into the historic centre, your usual targets are Santa Lucia by train or Piazzale Roma by bus, then walking or ACTV boats.
If you arrive late and the next public leg is gone, use the signed station taxi/NCC flow or wait for the next published train or bus rather than accepting informal rides. Venezia Mestre is an RFI assistance station; RFI's assistance window and 1-hour request rule are described under Venice stations, and ACTV's EUR 1.50 accessible ticket rule is published on Venice Urban Services.
Piazzale Roma Bus Terminal to Venice
Piazzale Roma is Venice's road edge: airport buses, local buses, cars, taxis, and the walking route into the historic centre all converge here. Checked August 2026, ATVO describes Venezia Piazzale Roma Bus Station as the main bus arrival and departure point in the road transport terminal, with an ATVO ticket office and 24-hour self-service machines on Venezia Piazzale Roma Bus Station.
From Piazzale Roma, the simplest move for station-side or Cannaregio hostels is to walk over the Ponte della Costituzione toward Venezia Santa Lucia; official routing puts Santa Lucia 5 to 10 minutes away on Venice Airport transport. For island or farther canal-side stays, use the marked ACTV docks and check current routes on ACTV routes and timetables. Do not invent a longer bridge march if your hostel gives a boat stop.
Tickets depend on whether you are leaving Piazzale Roma by ATVO coach, ACTV bus, waterbus, or People Mover. ATVO has the ticket office and 24-hour machines at the bus station on Venezia Piazzale Roma Bus Station. ACTV tickets can be bought in the AVM Venezia app or loaded to smart cards, with app activation and onboard payment limits on Venice Urban Services. Waterbus onboard tickets are POS; bus onboard tickets are cash only where available.
For Tronchetto or Marittima, the People Mover is the rail-like connector. Checked August 2026, AVM lists the Tronchetto-Marittima-Piazzale Roma route, about 4 minutes end to end, EUR 1.50 one-way, with summer hours 07:00-23:00 weekdays and 08:00-22:00 holidays on People Mover. ACTV says tram and People Mover tickets cannot be bought onboard, but the current evidence here does not establish the exact purchase channel at each station; verify before entering the platform area.
If service is disrupted, stay with marked ACTV docks, the bridge, People Mover, licensed land taxis, or municipal water-taxi stations. Isola Nova del Tronchetto Coach Station to Venice
Tronchetto is useful if your coach actually drops you there. It is not the best default for Cannaregio or station-side hostels when you could arrive at Santa Lucia, Piazzale Roma, or Mestre FS directly. Checked August 2026, Venezia Unica lists Isola Nova del Tronchetto under bus-terminal arrivals, and AVM runs the People Mover from Tronchetto through Marittima to Piazzale Roma on Piazzale Roma - Terminal Bus and People Mover.
The operating move is simple: follow coach-station signs to the People Mover, ride to Piazzale Roma, then walk toward Santa Lucia or switch to ACTV boats. Checked August 2026, AVM lists the People Mover as about 4 minutes, EUR 1.50 one-way, with summer hours 07:00-23:00 weekdays and 08:00-22:00 holidays on People Mover. ACTV states People Mover tickets cannot be bought onboard on Venice Urban Services; the current official evidence here does not publish the exact Tronchetto purchase channel, so check the station signage before crossing into the paid area.
If you need a boat instead, Alilaguna Blue lists Tronchetto among its stops on the Blue Line, but last-boat reliability needs a same-day check because 2026 notices included event suspensions and shortened water routes on Alilaguna alerts. For taxis, use licensed stands or municipal water-taxi stations; the Comune tariff sheets include Tronchetto on water-taxi tariffs.
For accessibility, the People Mover is the relevant connector, and ACTV publishes the EUR 1.50 special-ticket rule for EU Disability Card holders and wheelchair users on Venice Urban Services. If the People Mover is outside its operating window or not usable for your mobility setup, verify ACTV boat status on ACTV routes and timetables or use a licensed taxi/water-taxi station.
For a first night in the historic centre, station-side and Cannaregio are the low-drama targets: direct train to Venezia Santa Lucia, ACTV or ATVO to Piazzale Roma then the bridge, or Alilaguna Orange to Guglie. For Mestre hostels, aim for Venezia Mestre rail, Mestre FS airport coaches, or FlixBus Mestre train-station stops, so you do not spend night one dragging a backpack over Venice bridges for no reason.
