First the good parts: common areas were nice (sofas, billiardtable etc.), the kitchen was big, many facilities, also this older woman employee was super nice to us Then the downfall: when we arrived there, the staff didn’t tell us anything about the hostel (where is the kitchen or the bathrooms etc) or the area around, our hostel room was dirty, the floor and the fan were in dust, our lockers were also dirty and still had other people’s stuff, we also found bedbug or cockroach marks from my friend’s locker, one day they shut all the toilets at the same time for like an hour to clean them, usually the kitchen was also dirty: people didn’t clean their pots or pans (they were left dirty in the evening and were found at the same spot dirty in the morning) staff just ignored that usually, also they didn’t tell us anything about the yha app, would recommend just for a one night if even that

My room was dirty when I arrived. Floor was dusty and my locker had bedbug or cockroach marks. Someone had also left their things to my locker. Common areas were clean and large. Kitchen was sometimes dirty because other people didn't wash their dishes. One day staff was cleaning bathrooms for one hour so I couldn't go to any bathroom. It was nice to be near to the beach and it was easy to take a bus to the center. It's okay if you stay only for one night.

YHA Coolangatta werkt het best als airport-side crash pad met een beetje hostelleven eraan vast. Gold Coast Airport ligt op ongeveer 10 minuten lopen, het strand is dichtbij, en bussen kunnen je richting town brengen, al ligt centraal Coolangatta niet direct voor de deur. Het hostel heeft een grote gezamenlijke keuken, ruime gedeelde zones, een klein zwembad, lockers en een laid-back sociale setup met vrijdag-BBQ’s en filmavonden. Personeel kan warm en behulpzaam zijn, met Heather en Sarah die bij naam opvallen. De trade-off is comfort. Kamers zijn basic, geluid draagt hard vanaf de snelweg, luchthaven, deuren en gangen, en er is geen airconditioning. Matrassen, hitte, licht, beperkte bedprivacy, awkward stroomtoegang en patchy schoonmaak kunnen slaap rough maken. Deze plek is het logischst voor een korte stop voor of na een vlucht, niet voor een gepolijste strandbasis-hostel.

- Luchthaven- en snelweggeluid kan luid zijn, vooral voor lichte slapers.
- Geen airconditioning, en kamers kunnen erg heet worden.
- Bedden en matrassen kunnen heel basic of versleten aanvoelen.
- Schoonmaak is wisselvallig in kamers, badkamers, lockers en de keuken.
- De locatie is handig voor vluchten en strand, maar niet ideaal voor centraal Coolangatta of boodschappen zonder bus of auto.
- Dormsfeer kan ongelijk voelen, vooral rond long-term occupants.
