Buy SkyBus online, in the app, or at a card-only kiosk; myki does not work on SkyBus. If you land in the 1:00-4:00 gap, use the signed taxi ranks outside T1, T2, or T4, or the Uber zones shown in the app outside T2 or in the T4 car park, because those pickup paths are airport-published.
Melbourne Airport (MEL) to Melbourne
Melbourne Airport is split into T1 Domestic, T2 International, T3 Domestic, and T4 Domestic. SkyBus City Express is the simplest city transfer: board at the kerbside stops outside T1, T3, or T4, ride to Southern Cross Station, and use the CBD rail, tram, or walking grid from there. Checked August 2026, SkyBus says the City Express runs daily from about 4:00 to 1:00, takes about 30 minutes to the CBD, runs every 10 minutes at peak and every 15 minutes off-peak, and return tickets price out at $21.70 per direction on the Melbourne City Express ticket page. Melbourne Airport also lists the airport SkyBus stops on its bus services page.
SkyBus is not a myki service. Buy before boarding online or in the SkyBus app, or use the card-only self-service kiosks at the airport. If you need to pay cash at MEL, the airport-published workaround is Prosegur or Smart Carte baggage storage inside T2 Arrivals, not the bus itself, according to Melbourne Airport's bus services information. At Southern Cross, SkyBus arrivals use the coach terminal on Spencer Street; airport departures back to MEL use Bay 75, and the operator lists a 9:00-18:00 cash workaround at Be My Guest Concierge on its Southern Cross Station page.
The cheaper public-transport route is Route 901 from the T4 Ground Transport Hub to Broadmeadows Station, then the Craigieburn Line to Southern Cross or Flinders Street. The bus interchange is on the ground floor of the T4 car park; from T1, allow about 10 minutes on foot if you do not use an inter-terminal shuttle. For St Kilda or bayside hostels, MEL has a more direct public coach option than AVV: Transport Victoria and Melbourne Airport list SkyBus Peninsula Express from T1 or T4 toward St Kilda and onward bayside stops on the airport bus services page. The 1:00-4:00 SkyBus gap is real as of August 2026. If Route 901 or the Craigieburn Line is not useful at your arrival time, the airport-published non-public fallbacks are taxi or Uber. Taxis use designated ranks outside T1, T2, and the T4 Transport Hub; Melbourne Airport says the CBD is about 30 minutes in normal conditions and warns passengers not to accept taxi offers away from the designated ranks on its taxi page. Walking from MEL to central Melbourne is not a sane default. For phone data, MEL is the better Melbourne arrival airport if you want a physical SIM. Airport pages list Optus, Vodafone, and the Welcome Centre in T2 Arrivals, and the Welcome Centre says it provides prepaid SIM cards on its store page. Checked August 2026, the airport pages did not publish cash-versus-card tender rules for those shops. Airline wheelchair assistance still needs to be arranged with the airline. Melbourne Avalon Airport (AVV) to Melbourne
Avalon is far southwest of Melbourne, so the default is not to freestyle it. Checked August 2026, SkyBus Avalon City Express runs between Avalon Airport, Werribee, and Southern Cross Station, meets major flights, waits for delayed arrivals, and takes around 90 minutes depending on traffic on the Avalon City Express page. Adult fares are $29 one way or $54.80 return to Melbourne City on the SkyBus fare page.
At AVV, SkyBus uses the Avalon Airport/Outside Terminal stop. It is not a myki service: buy online or in the SkyBus app, use card-only self-service where available, and do not assume cash onboard. Avalon departures from Southern Cross use Bay 74, and SkyBus identifies the city-side coach-terminal location on its Avalon City Express locations page. Because Avalon City Express times vary with flight arrivals, check the operator's current timetable if your flight is early, delayed, or late.
The public-transport alternative is Route 18 from Avalon Airport Terminal/Airport Drive to Lara Station, then a Geelong Line train to Southern Cross. Checked August 2026, Avalon says the airport bus connects with most flights, and Transport Victoria lists 21 weekday and 20 weekend services on Route 18 on the route 18 timetable page. This is the budget route, not the frictionless route: Lara is the interchange, and Southern Cross is still the useful Melbourne arrival point.
Route 18 and the Geelong Line use myki in the myki area. The half-price Victorian public transport cap applies from 1 June 2026 to the end of 2026 with a full-fare daily maximum of $5.70, but it excludes SkyBus, ferries, and non-subsidised regional buses under the state government's half-price travel notice. The checked AVV material did not establish a myki machine inside Avalon Airport, so arrive with a working myki if you plan to use Route 18, or verify the current ticket-buying path with Transport Victoria's airport transport page before committing to the public route.
For St Kilda or bayside hostels, AVV is the wrong airport for a neat one-seat ride. The sourced route goes to Southern Cross; from there, transfer by tram or train using PTV. If SkyBus or Route 18 does not fit your arrival, Avalon publishes taxis directly outside the terminal, served by 13CABS, Black & White Cabs, and Geelong Taxi Network. Walking from AVV to Melbourne or Geelong is not a reasonable arrival route. Checked August 2026, Avalon says the airport is 55 km from Melbourne CBD and 20 km from Geelong CBD by road on its driving page. The terminal frontage and car parks are a short official 5-minute walk, useful for pickup and parking only, per the airport FAQ.
AVV's physical SIM path is thin. Avalon says Relay Newsagency sells SIM cards and is open daily 5:00-17:30 on the domestic-terminal facilities page. Checked August 2026, that page does not publish SIM brands, stock reliability, or whether cash or card is accepted. Use airport Wi-Fi first, carry a card and passport, and treat Relay as a staff-and-stock-dependent fallback; Australian prepaid activation still needs ID checking under ACMA's prepaid mobile ID rules.
For AVV eSIM, card payment is the practical path and cash is not an airport-published option. Avalon lists free airport Wi-Fi but no carrier eSIM counter on its domestic page. Telstra and Optus both describe online or app-based prepaid eSIM workflows with ID and payment steps on Telstra's prepaid eSIM page and Optus's prepaid plans page. Buy or prepare the eSIM before arrival if you land after Relay closes.
Money at AVV is also thinner than MEL. For service status, use Avalon arrivals and departures, SkyBus's Avalon timetable, and PTV route checks before choosing Route 18.
Phone, data, and money on arrival
Sort out data before the terminal Wi-Fi becomes a plot twist. If you plan to use a travel eSIM, install it before flying and switch it on only when its activation terms say to. Save the hostel address, booking, first route, and one offline map while you still have a known-good connection.
Australia uses the Australian dollar (AUD). For a physical SIM, keep your passport handy and use the terminal-specific seller details above; registration, stock, opening hours, and cash/card acceptance can differ by shop. For an eSIM, install it before the trip and check the provider's activation-start rule.

Cash, cards, and ATMs
An ATM can involve four different costs: the machine operator's surcharge, your bank's fee, the card network's exchange-rate markup, and—on a credit card—a cash-advance fee. The amount shown on the machine is not necessarily the whole bill. Read the confirmation screen and cancel if the fee or currency is unclear.

Southern Cross Railway Station to Melbourne
Southern Cross is already central Melbourne, not a remote arrival point. Checked August 2026, Transport Victoria describes it as the main rail gateway for most metropolitan and regional lines, with metropolitan platforms 9-14 and separate regional train platforms on the Southern Cross station map and travel page. For CBD, Docklands, and many hostel arrivals, your next move is often just the concourse exit, a short walk, or a tram in the Free Tram Zone.
For tickets, use myki for metropolitan trains and most trams, and follow V/Line ticketing rules for regional services. The PTV Hub is on the concourse near the Spencer Street and Collins Street corner, according to Transport Victoria's staffed stations page. Southern Cross Coach Terminal to Melbourne
The coach terminal is part of the Southern Cross complex but it is a distinct arrival point, with its main entrance on Spencer Street. Checked August 2026, Transport Victoria lists regional coach services and airport bus services from the coach terminal on the Southern Cross station map and travel page. SkyBus airport arrivals drop at the Spencer Street coach terminal; MEL departures use Bay 75 and Avalon departures use Bay 74 on SkyBus's Southern Cross Station page.
If you arrive by airport bus or regional coach, you are already at the western edge of the CBD. For Docklands, the CBD grid, Flinders Street, and central hostels, use the signed station concourse, Free Tram Zone stops, or the rail platforms inside Southern Cross. For St Kilda, transfer to the appropriate tram or train rather than assuming the coach terminal is the final useful stop.
SkyBus tickets are separate from myki. Buy SkyBus online, in the app, or at card-only kiosks; Southern Cross's cash workaround is Be My Guest Concierge from 9:00 to 18:00, according to the operator's Southern Cross Station page. Port Phillip Ferries Docklands Passenger Ferry Terminal to Melbourne
Port Phillip Ferries Docklands arrives at Victoria Harbour Promenade, 131 Harbour Esplanade, opposite Marvel Stadium. Checked August 2026, the operator describes the Docklands berth as 5-10 minutes on foot from Southern Cross Train Station on its locations page. For trams, use Stop D3 Marvel Stadium/Bourke Street Docklands for routes 35, 70, or 75; the ferry operator lists those connections on its tours and transport page.
From Portarlington, the ferry is a scheduled 70-minute passenger service to Docklands. Checked August 2026, off-peak Docklands arrivals are 8:25, 12:10 on Tuesdays only, 17:10 on most weekdays, and 10:10 or 18:10 on weekends; adult one-way fares are $21.50 Monday-Friday and $25.00 on weekends or public holidays on the Portarlington-Docklands timetable and fare page. Tickets must be pre-booked online or through listed retail partners; myki does not apply to ferries, and the Victorian half-price public transport cap explicitly excludes ferries.
Geelong ferry arrivals are useful only outside the current winter pause. Checked August 2026, Port Phillip Ferries says Geelong-Docklands sailings are paused from 25 May 2026 and return on 5 September 2026; the published normal weekend service is Geelong 16:00 to Docklands 18:10 via Portarlington, with adult fares from $23.00 off-peak or $26.50 peak on the Geelong-Docklands ferry page. For onward movement, Docklands is inside the useful central zone but it is not the whole CBD. Walk 5-10 minutes to Southern Cross if that is your hostel-side interchange, or use Stop D3 for trams 35, 70, or 75. The ferry service-gap fallback depends on which sailing failed. Step-free access at Docklands is specific: use the external lift to reach Harbour Esplanade when stairs are a problem, according to Port Phillip Ferries' locations page. Live departures and disruptions are not a PTV metro-style turn-up-and-go product here; check the operator's timetable and service updates before travelling.
For a first night, the easiest hostel zones are Southern Cross, CBD, Docklands, and Flinders Street if you want the least transfer friction. MEL SkyBus, AVV SkyBus, Port Phillip Ferries to Docklands, and Route 901 plus the Craigieburn Line all point naturally into that grid. St Kilda is doable, but from AVV especially it is a second move after Southern Cross.
