Explain how it works

We compare every 5★ review's word count against the global distribution. Hostels where unusually many top-rated reviews are suspiciously short — way under the typical length — start to look like the staff (or a boost-my-listing service) is padding the score with throwaway praise.

The detector flags reviews that are both top-rated and below a length threshold, then estimates how many of them statistically shouldn't exist. For this hostel we scanned 860 top-rated reviews and 0% were suspiciously short.

Length z-score: 7.10. A z-score measures how far this hostel's distribution of 5★ review lengths sits from the global average, in standard deviations. 0 = perfectly typical. 1–2 = slightly unusual but within normal noise. 3–5 = strongly anomalous. Anything 10+ means the pattern is so far from the global norm that it's effectively impossible to get there organically.

This is a heuristic, not a verdict — it surfaces hostels worth a second look, not proof of fraud. Read the actual reviews below and judge for yourself.

The cat lol Didn‘t like anything here, the smell at the entrance… the people were weird (other guests), the staff was ok but could always be friendlier, way too loud (thank god I sleep late), you hear every step since it‘s a VERY old building. Wish I’d listened to the reviews and paid more for staying somewhere else. Good thing was they let me change my room after seeing a cockroach my first SLEEPLESS night there. I definitely still have a trauma lol.

DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOSTEL, BE SURE TO READ REVIEWS This hostel is one of the most disgusting places I have ever been. The floors have a thick layer of grime, the common area couches and chairs are stained and reek of cat pee, the washing machines are mouldy, the bathrooms are dirty and hard to use, and the fridge was filled with rotting food left by previous guests. The place smells HORRIBLE, it is grease layered on top of every food smell layered on top of cat pee layered on top of the thickest must that could only have been caused by a severe rodent infestation. There were nests of dust and lint in corners, most likely caused by mice. I checked in at 3pm, showered and washed my clothes, and then realized I could not possibly be able to sleep in this place. I would have rather slept on a park bench. I left that same night at around 9pm and found another place to stay. I felt so gross after being at this hostel that I showered AGAIN after I left and rewashed my clothes at a laundromat. The service here is horrible and the manager needs a serious reality check. A child could do his job better than him. I was only refunded a portion of what I paid to be here, which is fine but I was offered no apology and was spoken to in a very demeaning manner. When I told him he could do better, he said some nonsense about Vancouver being the most expensive city in the world. I dont believe that is true, and even if it was it does not excuse running a business that puts customers in a place that may damage their health. The hostel I rebooked at is clean and wonderful and a similar price. There is no excuse for this hostel to be as filthy as it is. Poor management and maintenance. I truly believe all of the good reviews are fake. Do not book here, spend the extra money elsewhere if necessary.

    • Pressure to leave a review asked for the water, and wouldn’t have left this review

I normally never feel compelled to write bad reviews but avoid at all cost unless you are desperate for cost reasons or just want to party. The only good part of this hostel is its convenient location. It’s old, crusty and smells terrible. But that alone does not warrant complaint yet. I booked a female only room, and when my roommates and I were sleeping, a male guest opened our door. We also had items (e.g. underwear) hanging in our room. The hostel had given him his ‘mixed room’ key. I had to bring him down to the front desk to check. The employee was very confused and had to call her manager. After wasting 15 minutes of my time, they finally figured it out, blamed their system and DID NOT APOLOGIZE AT ALL. I asked for some water (they charge $1.50) as a BARE MINIMUM compensation, and he refused and said I had to pay. I called him out for not even apologizing for all the damage and wasting my time resolving this mistake out. His response and attitude was terrible. This experience was ridiculous, and this is the worst customer service I’ve ever encountered from many hostels. It truly ruined my night. Talk about cheap as hell. They charge for everything. Come at your own risk. They’re extremely unorganized. Looking at the reviews, they have a history of bad customer service from certain staff and all they do is say ‘we’ll improve and to send an email’ instead of offering fair compensation for unnecessary damages. Reviews regarding cleanliness, odour, lack of outlets, and loudness also remain true. EDIT: They have responded but they did not address the main point (customer service). I still do not feel heard. I totally understand mistakes happen, but it would not have been ‘immediately resolved’ had I not picked things up. The issue lies in the customer service and attitude of the manager. Shameful and still not addressed. Wouldn’t it be normal to APOLOGIZE for making such a mistake and wasting a customer’s time, or even offering some basic compensation? Cough, $1.50 water is not worth customer satisfaction apparently. Had I received an apology, I wouldn’t have asked for the water, and wouldn’t have left this review.

Vibe Analysis

Cambie Hostel - Gastown sits in a very central spot near Waterfront Station and downtown transit, so getting around on foot or by train is easy. The building is old and worn, with wooden floors, tight rooms in some spots, and a rough-around-the-edges feel rather than a polished one. Two cats live on the first floor, which gives the building extra personality. The biggest tradeoff is noise. The bar below can push loud music, bass, karaoke, and late-night energy into the early hours, especially on the lower floors. Bathrooms and showers are often cramped and dated, and the kitchen can feel small for the number of beds. Some rooms and halls can also feel stale, damp, or a bit messy, so this works better for short, social, city-focused stays than for anyone chasing quiet rest.
