Explain how it works
We compare every 5★ review's word count against the global distribution. Hostels where unusually many top-rated reviews are suspiciously short — way under the typical length — start to look like the staff (or a boost-my-listing service) is padding the score with throwaway praise.
The detector flags reviews that are both top-rated and below a length threshold, then estimates how many of them statistically shouldn't exist. For this hostel we scanned 1570 top-rated reviews and 0% were suspiciously short.
Length z-score: 6.02. A z-score measures how far this hostel's distribution of 5★ review lengths sits from the global average, in standard deviations. 0 = perfectly typical. 1–2 = slightly unusual but within normal noise. 3–5 = strongly anomalous. Anything 10+ means the pattern is so far from the global norm that it's effectively impossible to get there organically.
This is a heuristic, not a verdict — it surfaces hostels worth a second look, not proof of fraud. Read the actual reviews below and judge for yourself.

Friendly and helpful staff. Not bad location too. Bed was more comfortable than it looked and shower was good ....BUT room was very basic for the price and compared to the main pictures advertised. I also think it's kind of unethical to not supply drinkable water in the rooms and then offer free bottled water in exchange for a good review. Hence why I've now downgraded this review slightly.

1.- The bed came with a curtain, a bedside power outlet, and a reading light with adjustable brightness (I like this design because it helps avoid disturbing other guests). There are two bathrooms in the room. They are bright, spacious, and provide stable hot water, but only one of them has a toilet. It would be better if toilets were installed in both bathrooms. It would also be more convenient if more hooks were installed in the bathrooms for hanging clothes and towels. In addition, the bathrooms tend to feel cold and humid, so improving the ventilation system would make them more comfortable. 2.- Guests can borrow a hair dryer from the front desk. However, there are no power outlets for hair dryers in the bathrooms, and the only outlet available to me was next to my bed, which was not very convenient since I was staying in the upper bunk. After showering at night, I was worried about disturbing other guests if I used the hair dryer in the room. Fortunately, when I asked the front desk, the receptionist kindly allowed me to use the common lounge area to dry my hair. 3.- There are not many restaurants or supermarkets nearby, and it takes a bit of walking to reach the livelier areas of the city (though they are still within walking distance). The advantage, however, is that the surroundings are quiet at night. The common lounge area also closes at 11 p.m. 4.- The breakfast room is clean and bright. Although the breakfast options were the same every day, there was still a decent variety, and it was nice to have a filling meal before heading out, especially during winter. Compared with the price of buying breakfast on site, I personally think booking a room with breakfast included may be more cost-effective. (1). There is no elevator and no kitchen facilities (no refrigerator or place to heat up food). Wi-Fi coverage could be improved. My room was located directly below the reception desk, yet I could not receive any Wi-Fi signal there. (2). The room felt quite dim and had an unpleasant smell. In addition, I stayed on weekdays, but the room and bathrooms were not cleaned daily, the toilet paper was not replenished, and the trash bins were not emptied every day either. For a shared dormitory used by multiple guests, the cleaning frequency could definitely be improved. (3). Free hot drinking water is only available during breakfast hours. At other times, the coffee machine near the reception desk is the only place to get hot water, which costs 50 pence per cup. The front desk explained that guests need to pay for hot water because the coffee machine uses electricity. This was an interesting explanation. I wonder whether the hostel has considered purchasing a simple electric kettle instead of keeping the coffee machine plugged in all day. (4). I booked an eight-bed dorm online, but when I arrived, the front desk told me the eight-bed dorm was full and assigned me to a ten-bed dorm instead. They said this was due to an error in the Booking.com reservation system and asked me to contact the platform myself. During my stay, I reported the issue to the booking platform and also requested a refund of the price difference from the hostel. However, communication between the front desk and the platform did not seem smooth, as both sides told me they had not received messages from the other. Eventually, after I wrote directly to the hostel management, they agreed to process the refund. Even then, I had to follow up several times to track the progress, and it ultimately took about two months to complete the refund. This experience affected my overall rating of the stay, and I mention it here so future guests can be aware of possible room discrepancy issues.
